Prairie

Basenji Feeding
  • Anyone ever heard of Prairie?

We just had to change Indys's food and this is what they guy at the petstore suggested. The ingredients list looks good and Indy loves it. We would like to feed Evo but he just explodes every time we try so thats not an option. We used to feed California Natural but you have to drive forever to get it. So anyone have any thoughts?

  • If you are going to feed EVO you NEED to mix food for about 2 weeks. THe change to no grain for most dogs will cause VERY loose stool for a week or so, especialy if you simply change over imediatly.

Is the food Natures Variety? It seems to have a good ingredients list, and no corn or wheat, which is a BIG plus as far as I am concerned (What with Charlie's super allergy to corn)

  • Prairie is one of the foods that I rotate my cats on. They love it. It is a good high quality food.

  • I've used it - as does a couple of Gordon Setter breeders around here - dogs like it - seem to do well on it.

@Saving said in Anal Gland Health Diet Adjustment (ideas?): scavenging on walks has increased though and that's quite annoying. LOL, omgosh! The amount of food tossed on the ground is astounding! And doodle will grab it up before I have any idea it's there! I wish I had a picture of the day she pulled a (whole) bagel out of a bush!

Not sure how Xylitol is being marketed. It is an alcohol found in a lot of plants, including birch wood, which is the source of Xylitol used in medicines. And it is toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Most of the time you find it in sugarless gum and candy. Here is an FDA warning "Paws Off Xylitol": https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/paws-xylitol-its-dangerous-dogs

Thank you everybody so much! I appreciate all the info. I had some vanilla Breyer's all natural and gave my guy a taste of that... boy does he seem to think that's a great treat! Obviously, though I don't want that to be the only thing I do. I'm going to follow up with our vet on getting a draw for the full thyroid panel at hemopet once next pay check comes through. You were right he was only checked for T4. Thank again basenji forums! I was looking back at pics from when he was younger and weighed more. I think he's always been a bit taller than standard and had a little barrel chest. Used to call him a basenji bouncer at the dog park. He was all about playing with the labs, pits and other big dogs - probably because he knew he could outrun them if they ever got too rough. He's much more about slow walks with me and lap snuggles these days ❤

I know this topic is old, but I give my B freeze dried salmon bites as treats. I usually find them in the cat section

My b-kids all love Instinct - every flavour I've tried has been a huge hit.
