Was Morning at the Vet… now Chance

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Be sure to let up know how he is doing??? And how "bad" the little tri bundle is being…

  • yes what Pat said, lets us know!!!

  • Well the vet called right around lunch time as I was checking on Kiya. As the vet said "Chance is a NEW man" hahaha
He did fine and was in recovery. I will be picking him up after work this evening and taking him home. He was given an elizabeth collar (by my request).
Kiya is doing well. Her shoulder is a little tender and she is quite tired. She really misses Chance. When I came home she ran all over the house looking for her buddy. Poor girl misses him.
This weekend were going to be keeping a close watch on Chance. Our house is 3 levels of stairs. Poor guy won't be walking much :(

  • How come you requested the E-Collar?

Really by tomorrow morning, he should have no problems with stairs… you will be surprised how fast they bounce back...

  • Topper was sore and pouted for a couple of days, Eddie hardly noticed. He was glued together, the vet just said not to let him lick excessively, he truly didn't slow down for a moment. Hopefully Chance will be like Eddie!

  • @tanza:

How come you requested the E-Collar?

Not the E-Collar. The "No Lick" Elizabeth Collar. It does not actually look like a lamp shade.
The vet tech accidently thought I wanted the E-Collar though and he came out with that darn lampshade. Poor guy. He hated it. He kept slammin his head into the walls to try to take it off. I immediatley took it off. He has been trying to lick himself but im watching him like a hawk. In the morning I will be picking up a no lick collar for the rest of the week.

Chance and Kiya are doing well…Kiya could tell that Chance is feeling under the weather. She has been resting next to him. She will wake up at times and lick his ears as if to say she understands. :o
Here is a pick I just took on my phone. Kiya is sleeping right next to him.

Chance is still a little groggy. He ate a few bites and drank some water. I gave him a couple treats and he ate em right up. I think he will be sleeping the rest of the night….
Not to sound gross...but man oah man....his incision sure looks painful.
The stitches will disolve on their own so he shouldn't have to go back to the vet unless there is a problem with healing.

  • Nicky had the internal stitches, they really didn't look that bad. Healed up real nice and our biggest challenge was keeping him from overdoing since he was like a puppy by the next morning ready to chase Rio all over the house. With Rally's C-section and her spay they used glue.

That's how Querk's was too. No external stitches, just glue on the outside. It didn't even look too swollen.

Yea, all of mine too…. I think they have been doing that for quite a few years now...

Interesting, I have never heard of a E-Collar "no lick"? But then again, I just made my own....

  • Glad he is back home same and sound, although a few berries short

Different thing, I thought the "E-Collar" was the "Elizabethan Collar" and these are the "No Bite" Collars (also called no lick)

Right, the E-Collar is the Elizabethan Collar (we usually just call them E-Collars)… I had never heard of "no lick" Elizabethan Collar. I tried one from the link you posted and could never get it sized right, which is why I figured I could make my own...

  • I actually have never needed to use one with my Bs (knocking on wood!) I have had cats that required them. But so far (only a couple of surgeries) the dogs haven't bothered their incisions.

Now…orangutans...whoo...I could tell you some horror stories ;) from the wandering mind of a former zookeeper ;)

  • The only time I used one was for Kristii's liver tumor surgery… when she was split from "stem to stern."... while she didn't lick the incision, she would "worry" about it and lick the inside of her back leg.. which could have turned into a nasty lick sore....

Also I have used Tea Tree Oil around (not on) incisions... just to deter them "if" they thought about licking....

  • Vanessa,

Glad to hear that Chance is doing better. I am sure he will be bounding up and down those stairs in no time!

Cara had coccidia when we got her, but I have read research that it is killed more easily with ammonia than bleach so that's what I used–- pick up, pour ammonia over area. Neither Connor nor Arwen got it. But since you weren't doing it before, do take in stool samples of the other dogs to avoid them continuing to pass it around. A dog can have it with limited effect and still be passing it in stools to recontaminate your pup. http://www.sheltermedicine.vet.cornell.edu//shelter/coccidia.htm

Is there anyone out in the New Jersey area (or knows of a site that I can be directed to) who knows of any vets that have knowledge of Basenjis? We have a 4 month old Basenji and our breeder took her to the vet at 8 wks but she hasnt been to one since so I've been looking for a good vet for a standard visit and cant seem to find one who knows about Basenjis (well all the vets Ive talked to, act like they know about them but you can tell they've never had one as a patient ;0 Thanks for the help!

Info sent from BCOA: Improved Methodology For FANCONI LINKAGE Tests: FTA Paper / Saliva Option A new process has been implemented for ordering Fanconi tests that uses saliva rather than blood for sample collection using FTA paper. Dr Johnson may still request blood for some research projects, but in many cases, the FTA paper will satisfy that requirement. The new procedure will also allow you to check the status of your test request online with use of a conformation code that will be emailed to you when the order is placed. You can now order a test on the internet and pay by credit card. The price the kit and test will be $65 to cover the cost of the kit and mailing. The test can be ordered from one of two websites: 1- The The Canine Phenome Project website From the dogs profile page in this site, click Fanconi Test. This will link you directly to the OFA site to order the test kit. 2- The OFA site. [[url]www.offa.org] Go to the "OFA DNA Testing" link on the OFA website The test kit will allow the use of saliva applied to a special paper card that can then be returned to the lab. The special paper (FTA paper) will supply enough DNA samples for over twenty tests so when the direct marker is found, no further DNA collection will be required. Adding the dog to the Canine Phenome site is still required before results will be sent, but the ordering the test kit is a separate entry at this point. The kit consists of the FTA card Foam swab to collect the saliva Instructions Labels for mailing to the University of Missouri Any tests in progress from the previous procedure will be completed. The OFA and the University of Missouri have entered into a cooperative agreement to offer this new procedure. Thank you!
