Yea for foster home!

  • Most of us who do rescue couldn't if we didn't have foster homes to help us.
I love this and hope you read it even if it's not new to you.

I read this to myself after every foster dog leave my home…

    To My Foster Parent

There I sat, alone and afraid,
You got a call and came right to my aid.
You bundled me up with blankets and love.
And, when I needed it most, you gave me a hug.
I learned that the world was not all that scary and cold.
That sometimes there is someone to have and to hold.
You taught me what love is, you helped me to mend.
You loved me and healed me and became my first friend.
And just when I thought you'd done all you do,
There came along not one new lesson, but two.
First you said, "Sweetheart, you're ready to go.
I've done all I can, and you've learned all I know."
Then you bundled me up with a blanket and kiss.
Along came a new family, they even have kids!
They took me to their home, forever to stay.
At first I thought you sent me away.
Then that second lesson became perfectly clear.
No matter how far, you will always be near.
And so, Foster Mom or Dad, you know I've moved on.
I have a new home, with toys and a lawn.
But I'll never forget what I learned that first day.
You never really give your fosters away.
You gave me these thoughts to remember you by.
We may never meet again, and now I know why.
You'll remember I lived with you for a time.
I may not be yours, but you'll always be mine.

For the love of the animals for whom I’ve dedicated my life,
    Angela Portera
    New Orleans, LA

Bless Angela's heart for putting into words the feelings I have, and can't get down on paper.

  • Very nice Sharon….thanks for posting. There's a similar poem in the "Miles a rescue" thread that I like a lot as well.:)

  • That is very sweet…and more importantly - true.

  • I would love to read Miles a Rescue, if you have it.

I also thank you for being so good to give this boy a,home. it sounds as though he's had a really rough time in the past but I know you'll make up for all that. I hope he gives you a lot of pleasure.

Please consider fostering-it is joy to help a Basenji! I have fostered two in the last few years-one a young Basenji who had pups at a shelter and an elderly female whose owners were going into an assisted care facility and were going to have her euthanized within a few days if not rescued. The elderly girl lived a few more years-just shy of her 17th birthday. She had never lived with other dogs before and she was fine with my pack-but my dogs knew that she was older and wanted to be left alone. She was spunky though and would nip at them if they got out of line! If I was not having health problems, I would foster one! Jennifer

Thanks Sharron. I'm passing this on to my friends that have fostered outside our breed.
