Eye issues

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hey guys.

Kali has had some strange eye issues. When we first got her, her eyelashes grew in her eyes, causing her to squint and scratch at it all the time. We fixed that, but she always holds that eye closed more than the other, and there was always less hair around that eye. Now the other eye has way less hair around it, and she's sort of squingting in that one, too. She's also shedding a lot too, especially on her neck.

We still have that stray we found in January. Could it possibly be that Kali is just stressed out that there's an intruder on her turf?

    Thoughts?

  • If she's loosing hair then it sounds like it might be something more than just stress-of-an-intruder. The stray could have brought something nasty along. Maybe there's mites or something. I would take both to the vet.

@senjisilly - I believe that she was seen by a Ophth so they would have seen if it was PRA since she had already been losing her sight

@Abaihya think you need a new Vet, no way should the Thyroid blood test be that price.... They draw the blood and it is sent out....

I was only recommending a shampoo to use in the future, not one that would clear up any skin problems. If the dog has allergies, she needs to be careful about what kind of general shampoo to use. Jennifer

Of course required for artificial… reread and don't know where you got I didn't know that. I said: As for proving, if you are not using semen, you don't have to test generally. Pretty clear I know if you use semen (ie not live cover) you have to test. But you ALSO have to test when producing lots of litters. I saw no reason to get into the specifics there. But let me state it clearly so you don't argue more on item that has nothing to do with the issue.. If you use semen (ie not live cover) you have to do DNA. If you do live cover, generally you do NOT have to do DNA unless you 1. use more than one stud 2. the stud produces a certain number of litters (not looking up number) and a few other situations. And Pat, chill, really. I didn't say looks was the ONLY. My point, which I stated repeatedly, is that the African dogs also don't KNOW for sure if pure basenji.

As soon as I read the first post I thought of Sinbaje and her avatar. I hadn't realised Linda just how talented he is. Congratulations to Drew for his many great successes.

I'm glad to hear the spinal tap went so easily. What a brave little girl Keba is. When I first saw she was getting a spinal tap, I thought oh–that sounds painful. I hope things start improving for her.
