This story has some elements of urban myth in it - see http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/stuffedtoys.asp As they point out its not only stuffed toys that are treated with anti fungals/bacterials - fillings of duvets/doonas/quilts/comforters/ pillows/cushions/pet beds are all potentially treated with the same chemicals. Also there is no details that if you wash toy/quilt whether the chemical is removed/reduced. I would also be very surprised if there were any standards imposed on what is deemed appropriate or safe for pet toys - there seems to be little or no regulation as to what can be fed/added to pet food around the world. That is not to say that there are very good manufacturers of pet food/toys who take the research upon themselves. However if I went along to my local craft store and bought a commercially available filling, how would I know whether it had been treated or not?

My parents got one of these but they didn't realize when they bought that they actually had to do regular maintainence with it, such as adding water and activators. They never really used it too much. So, if you don't mind that, it sounds like a pretty good idea. Definitely let us know, I've been thinking about getting one myself.

Vinegar and water is good on any surface that I have used it on over the years… and I think safe for any surface/material.... When I have puppies, I keep a spray bottle of 1/2 and 1/2.... then when I had all elders in the house maybe 1/3 vinegar and 2/3 water.. I would start out with warm water, but since I just left the bottle sitting around.. it was really room temp. I found that the elders pee was much less concentrated then the pups.. so lots less smell... however puppy pee is way smaller in size... ggg

I've had a dog door in my sliding glass door, but I had one put in the wall when I got a nice new sliding glass door and didn't want to ruin the look (and some accessibility). I've had 3 basenjis over about 18 years, and they have loved being able to go out and sunbathe in the backyard whenever they feel like it. They stay in when it's raining or cold–but will go out to do their business.
