Dog escape

Basenji Talk
  • Well this weekend we went to stay with some family out in the suburbs and my B loved it. They have a huge back yard to play in and the kids love him. Well one of the kids left the gate opened and when I heard our B escaped, I rushed out to grab him and then I heard a yell from my niece that he had crosses the street and ran into someone's opened front door. I couldn't believe it, I rushed in and there he was strolling through the house like owned that place. I scooped him up and gave thousands of apologies. I'm just thankful a car did not come and also glad he did not nip anyone. Believe me those kids got an earful. If you love your furry cousin, you better make sure the gate is locked. Needless to say that the rest of the day I was all eyes on the B. Funny story though now that all is O.K.

  • We'd had Keoki for one day before he found a space in the gate that he could squeeze through. I had just told my 16 yo daughter that he'd found it, and I was going in the house, so she needed to watch extra carefully and keep him away from that part of the yard.

Within five minutes the yells came, "The puppy's out!" Grrrrrr
Fortunately, he was only investigating the neighbor's back yard. The kids got an earful, and dh fixed the problem that night.

  • Boy, you were lucky…funny story after the fact...I wonder what those people thought when he was walking through their house...

  • Who let the fox in..hahaha

Looks like you are out of luck. Basenji's are escape artists. Could use your 3 ft wall and then build a 4 ft behind it only 2 ft apart??? Put a port hole in the inner fence so it can return to you side of the yard. stafford morse

In your position, where you really have to take her out a lot, I understand. And I hope her comfort continues. My point was it is situational need, not dog need to be that social. :) I have a slim chance of that having worked with my current 2, but with my incredibly dog aggressive first one, I'd have been out in a basket muzzle and warning everyone to keep their dogs away.

Well, the lab I mentioned (chocolate overweight one) almost took me out by slamming into my knee. I commented loudly " he better not insure my knee!" No comment from the owner. Others were keeping an eye on this over exhuberant dog too. Many peeps were standing behind a bench for protection. What really bugs me is that the park has very visible signs when you enter it that say you must have control of your dog.

My old bitch is totally averse to being crated on her own. As a young adult when I was trying to insist that she go in on her own (after trying every method) I cruelly put a padlock on her crate. I left her a little while in the living room and was amazed to hear her scratching on the door. When I went in I was I found the padlock still intact on the crate. She must have pushed down one end and clambered through the gap!!!

@tanza: Got ya…. and how nice of her to sit up and puke!!! I am lucky (knock on wood) all mine ride great... crate pads keep them from sliding around and they just sleep anyway.... Sure makes clean-up easier! I used to keep wipes in the car to clean her, esp. before shows! ew. I just layer plastic bags in the trash can, and tie 'em off as used, then toss when we get to where there's an outside trash can. I'd make video to show, but really, that'd be gross  She's really good in her harness, so it works out quite well. As I said, Keoki continues to be my car challenge in terms of how to best travel with him. But he loves going in the car in general.
