Winter wear

Basenji Talk
  • Does any one know where I can get boots that will stay on. I have two Basenjis in Minneapolis. (I know that is cruel) but here they are and they like the snow until their paws get cold.

  • Howdy neighbor - I have tried a couple of different options and none of them have worked. They just lay on their backs and look at me like - what have you done to me - my feet are broken.

  • When Lillie had stitches in her paw, I needed to keep the paw dry. I tried everything. What worked and fit the best were natural rubber, waterproof dog boots by Pawz. 12 disposable boots…slips on, stays on. I believe they were around $17.00. Their website is www.PAWZDOGBOOTS.com. Of course, as soon as we came in from our walk, Lillie was trying to get them off.
Another waterproof dog boots we tried were waterproof nylon boots with non-skid soles and Velcro straps for a snug fit. $9.99 They did not fit as snug as the pawz. There is no website on the package. The company is Signature Fashion Pet Collection…#130 Waterproof Woof Boots.
    Good luck!
    Jodie:)

@Maya: Awww, SO cute!! Maya would love one of those. Sadly I have no clue how to knit :D Knitting actually isn't very difficult. Buy some yarn & knitting needles & google how to knit. Its reading patterns that trips me up. I started knitting a sweater for Lola when she was about 11 months old. It took me several months to get 75% done, and by then, she had changed enough that I recently took it apart & started over. I realized I needed to adjust the pattern to accommodate basenji chests being slightly deeper compared to their length than other dogs.

@Jarodkjv: Since someone is always home with the dogs a better choice may be the Playsafe collar, it is designed for daycare type settings. It won't open by itself but it has velcro tabs that can be pulled open easily even if the dogs are tangled up. The advantage would be that you could use it to hold them without worrying about it accidently opening. But it's not really designed to have a leash hooked to it so you would have to put a regular collar on them if you were going to take them out. That looks like a great alternative and I do think I'll give them a try. Although the dogs wear regular collars in the house, we always use martingales or sporn harnesses when we walk them. I found the website interesting and was fascinated by the dog cold weather gear. Don't need it here but it was still fascinating. Those of you who live where there is snow - Would your dogs really wear a long legged, full body snow suit? Check out the Arctic Fleeces. http://www.faithfulpetproducts.com/CoatsFloatsBoots.html Pat

If the wax doesn't work, try muttluks…my B wears them. It's funny at first for her, but she adjusts and takes her usual walks with them. Keep us posted on how the wax works...very interesting!

My dog has a few coat and has boots that she wears in the snow. She has a fleece hoodie and a jean jacket. I now have an IG doggie how hates the cold so I looked on the greyhound sites and found a coat that is made for basenji's and IG's. I forget the site off hand but I will look it up for you and get back to you. It is fleece and has a snooze(neck/head warmer). Great coat and easy to put on.
