    @giza1 Colorado is too far for me and I want to be able to pick up the Basenji instead of having someone else transport him/her. Thanks for the info though.

    It depends on the breeder. I come from Rottweiler breeding background... we expose puppies to loud noises, really loud, uneven sources, temp changes, etc etc. Getting one at 8 wks, start off slow. I am sort of shaking my head... grew up around hunters and dogs and none cared... but that was the norm. I did find what looks like a reasonable article that might help. Also, I know you are set on a male... but have you considered an older rescue? Brat, CampBasenji and other rescues might have the perfect dog for you if no puppies are available.     @Heinz57: He deleted his posts? Why? Obviously not someone you want to buy from… Most likely because they were challenged about breeding practices and health testing. Again, I hope that they read about Fanconi testing and health testing. I was glad to see that the bitch will be spayed and hope that they do so… but more I hope that they have the sire and dam tested and the pups if the sire and dam are not clears.

    Yes, if you want a rescue basenji you really need to be on top of it every day. They go fast, and unfortunately not always to educated homes. The effort is well worth it, though, both in getting a wonderful pup (who may need to work through some issues so you can both be reminded he's wonderful) and in the satisfaction of giving a basenji who's been misunderstood a wonerful forever home. Hang in there. Your pup will find you.
