Hives all over

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Allergies are tough. What changes in spring? Thinking of the obvious, you maybe are using sunscreen on yourself. Anything else you can think of that is different? Changes in laundry detergent, some new product in your house or car? Sure, could be something outside in the environment, but most allergens seem to have a season, I know they do for me. Hives all over the body....everywhere, or more in some areas? As far as keeping him inside, it might be worth a trial of a couple of days to see if anything changes....

  • Yes, I have looked at the picture. My other concern would be the steroid shot he had. What informs me here isn't dog experience but my own. Treatment for a contact allergy rash I developed a couple of years ago was oral prednisone (steroid) and instead of helping it resulted in me getting a rash all over my body which lasted for over a month, and that was after only 3 pills. ( I discontinued the medication right after the 3rd pill because I experienced very serious side effects including slurring my speech and being unable to walk properly or dial the phone for help!) I now know I am allergic to Prednisone. It is a known side effect in humans and can be serious in some people, apparently including me. I think there is an outside chance that the steroid injection may be the cause of the ongoing hives, but that is pure speculation based on my own experience. Usually in canines Prednisone causes thirst, frequent urination, hunger, and a short list of more serious issues, but not hives per se. I don't know about other steroids or what your pup was given, so I am only putting this out there as a possibility.

  • @lustopher - What are you feeding him? They can have allergies to food even if for a while with no issues. One of mine had allergies to corn.. but it really took a couple of years before it really showed to be a problem.

  • Agreed with @tanza 's idea that there may be some relation to food. What food and formula is Baako on? If not the cause of the allergies, diet can at least be modified to soothe the problem.

  • Had you opened a new bag around the time this started? Sometimes they change ingredients or suppliers of ingredients, which is the way an allergen can sneak in....

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

@elbrant said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: divisive I guess I'm a dreamer.... but I believe that adults can have discussions and opinions without resorting to name calling and rude remarks. Your input is valuable. Thanks, because it's become a religion as soon as you speak against it people get so offended. The last 3 years has shown that quite clearly @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: Another friend's dog has a swollen leg at the vaccination site of his booster which is not resolving I"m sorry to hear about your friend's loss and understand the concern about the other friend's swollen leg. I had a similar experience, one of my dog's (not doodle) had a grossly swollen leg following a vet visit. The Vet told me it was cancer and I opted to let her go. Month's later I read online that it could have been the result of an allergic reaction. Please advise your friend to research possible answers before she makes a decision. Will do, a lot of the medication/vaccines cause inflammatory responses so it could just be that, it's still not nice for the dog to have that experience @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: dry food ... suffering from malnutrition omgosh! That is so scary!! I doubt the big manufacturers would ever allow a real study to see the light of day, but I would love to see one done. Just the thought makes me want to keep feeding my girl human grade foods. Yeah the same here, her research indicated that raw chicken wings were the optimal food and contain pretty much everything needed. I guess if you think of some of the processed crap they have in supermarkets trading as food for humans you can imagine how low the bar can go for pet food.

@serenjane My Kembe had the freckles on her neck - more pronounced in summer months w/ the sun and also as she aged. I use to call her my little 🦒 giraffe. 😂

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

I will definitely do my homework before we chose where our next little furball comes from. Patty, I will call the Dr in the AM and ask him about Urtica. -ty He seemed rushed, it was the end of the day and we were not the last new patient. I feel like he didn't really address the current issue, he was prescribing what to do to prevent it from happening in the future. Einstein is finally running around today and starting to feel a bit better. But he still had a benedryl earlier today for the itching and scratching.
