Looking for a Female Basenji

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • I know we should have reserved months ago but we are still looking for a female basenji puppy to join our pack. I have submitted many inquires to other breeders but if anyone here come across an opportunity, it would be greatly appreciated to be contacted. Much thanks.

  • Good luck with your search.

  • All pups have been placed as responsible breeders have reservation lists. We are not at this time planning a litter for 2020 or 2021. I would be happy to talk to you about Basenjis. You can search for responsible breeders at www.basenji.org by state, however as far as I know all responsible breeders on the West Coast already have full reservation lists. You would be looking at litters possible in 2021. This is the time to connect with a responsible breeder and get on their reservation lists for 2021. And if you are looking for a dog that is hypoallergenic, Basenjis do shed and have dander so they are not really hypoallergenic. While they can do well with people with allergies, you need to spend time with them and more than one time. Be sure that you check out health testing yourself, regardless of what you might be advised. Tests for DNA testing is public knowledge at www.ofa.org. You need to have either a registration number or name to check this out for yourself to verify. I suggest all people looking for a Basenji, even my own, do this.

@hawk8875 - Those listing with AKC are paid advertisements. There is no requirement on who can pay to be listed. Go to www.basenji.org and then to find breeder and you can search by state. Breeders listed on there are members of the Basenji Club of America.

Thank you for the input eeeefarm, that is exactly what I'm planning to do once ive done some more research.i have been around many different breeds of dogs over the years but never owned one myself so I have a fair bit of knowledge about most breeds and I would never put my children in harm's way or any dog for that matter. If I'm not as sure as I can be about my family's ability to love, look after and train a dog we won't be having one. This is why I got onto this forum to gather as much information from owners (like your good self) and others who have bothered to read my message properly,as I can before we go ahead and take on a very large commitment.

@helle-devi Thank you for responding. I have already been in touch with the basenji sisters. I was not aware before I contacted them that they are located in CA. I think the distance between us is too great. If things didn’t work out between my basenji and one of their girls, the distance would be a problem. I did become a member on the Facebook site that you recommended. Thank you so much! I was unaware that such a site existed. Jo Ann

I live in San Francisco and I'm very interested in adopting a Basenji! Could you please contact me and give me more information …. i have had numerous basenjis .. starting out with my two RAMSES and NUBIA they had pups .. and although they were not planned pregnacies .. went to very good homes.. I still have some contact with one family .....that bought two of our pups ... My beloved Leeloo and MAx died last year ..... and I'm sooo in need of having the pitter patter of Basenji feet run around in my empty house... Aldo Villalta 415-587-5010

Glad you got your dog! I looked for a thread on her but didn't see it. Please be sure to get her Fanconi tested (NOT the strip tests, but the actual Fanconi DNA test) as soon as possible if she is not already tested. BRAT strip tests but does not DNA and sometimes people get confused and think a clear strop means no Fanconi. Only by doing the DNA will you know.

If funds are an issues, you can do what I used to do before BRAT came along. Find out the vet of the family your placing him with, have the family pay you for your expenses and then take the dog to the new familys vet for the surgery to be fixed. Drop the dog off the day of the surgery and then new owners pu the dog. They get to pay the bill. That makes sure the dog is fixed, sets up a new vet record for the new dog in the family, and you don't have to pay anything out of pocket. Mostly, you know the surgery WILL BE DONE. Thanks for making sure he is fixed before rehoming. That is so important.
