Hi, new to the forum, meet Cafu!

  • Hi everyone,

Cafu is our first Basenji, he is 5-months old. He is very friendly to us and to strangers, as well as other dogs. When out with him, we constantly get questions about him and the Basenji breed. I never imagined that we would get so much attention with a dog!

He is a loving companion, and like the typical Basenji, he is always up for some mischief in our house. This includes stealing our shoes, socks, underwear, and anything he feels we really need (reading glasses are a good example!).

We are wondering at what age Basenjis stop growing? It would be great if he stayed at his current weight (about 22 lbs) since we travel a lot and can still take him in the cabin.
    Thanks for any info,
    Tomas

  • Sadly if he's only 5 mos, he's got some growing to do... maybe as much as 8 to 10 pounds by the time he fully matures at 2 or 3.

Also.. be aware, friendly to other dogs at 5 mos is no guarantee it will continue. Keep socializing him with other dogs and avoid any negative occurrences... hopefully it will continue.

What a cutie! Where did you get him from?

  • Debra,
We got him from Julie Hartigan (Marjani Basenjis, Virginia). Thanks for the info!

  • Breed standard is 22 lbs for females, 24 lbs for males. Sure, you will find lots that go over that, but my five seemed to keep in that range. Maybe yours will too....

  • Ask the breeder how big the sire and dam are. That's a good idea. My first basenji, who was a champion, weighed nearly 26 pounds when she matured. My 2nd one would have been about that, but thanks to steroids, we did good to keep her at 30. My current rescue is a giant. We won't go there. I first dreamed of a SMALL dog, maybe 15 pounds tops after years of being a BIG DOG person (rottweilers and chows). I don't see that ever happening.

@tanza Oh yes. I give her 1/3 cup blue buffalo puppy kibble, 1 tbsp wet blue buffalo puppy, 1 tbsp yogurt or cottage cheese, (alternating) and if I se any sign of dandruf or dryness in her fur, I also add in a few drops of olive oil. I have chicken and vegetables every night, and I've been preparing my chicken unseasoned since I got rogue so I can use it for training on occasion, so sometimes if she's being stubborn I'll bury some tiny shreds of chicken in her food to get her to eat, or sometimes I'll do the same thing with some other high value treats. I don't feed her in a crate, but I've moved her bowl into my room so she's lessdistracted at mealtime, and she has a safe place to eat when my niece comes over. Rogue plays nice with my niece outside, but indoors, she's kind of a really big squeeky toy, so we have to watch her constantly. I also, on the rarest occasions, will give her a little tiny pinch of american, or sharp cheddar cheese. That seems to get her really excited. She doesn't get excited about cottage cheese, but american or sharp cheddar? She goes nuts. fagedabodit. And she get chews and kongs in the crate, but never meals. And she doesn't spend much time in there anymore since she's been house trained. She just sleeps in my bed. In fact, she's passed out next to me right now.

I think I see some of the basenji ears, especially in the second picture. I just want to grab them and rub them good! :) It's most likely that there is at least a black lab there too. Also it may be not the first "mix". If it is a generation over there may be more then one mix in there. But either way, Lilly is adorable! :):) It's awesome that she has a good forever home now.

She is sooooo cute!! At first I thought "how fuzzy!!!"….and the more I looked the more I thought this looks like a punk-rocker Basenji:D A little hair gel and a little vegetable dye with a spike collar and spike ankle bracelets......what a great halloween costume:) Adorable dog. Thanks for sharing.
