  • Hey all,

Visitor here from the UK who has only recently stumbled across this amazing breed!
I have been researching this specific breed and I like what I hear, despite all the 'negatives' that some people claim they possess.

I would really, really love to adopt a rescue pup, but since (to my knowledge) they are not common in the UK I believe that would be hard to do! Is this true, or are they actually pretty easy to come by?

If I couldn't rescue then I would love to buy a Basenji pup and raise it!
Is there anyone here who has any information regarding these dogs in the UK?

PS I just cannot stop watching videos of these dogs, they are so mischievous and alert, I LOVE it!
    Plus, they look AMAZING!

  • If you are on FaceBook, friend Jessica Baker, she is a breeder and has Basenjis. If I am not mistaken she may have a puppy from her Fall litters, but don't quote me on that

Hey, thank you for your reply
I do not have facebook so I googled her name instead and found her profile on champdogs.co.uk.
She breeds Basenjis as well as Pugs. Although she does not breed them all that often.

  • If you email me at: giza.1@mcsnet.ca I can put you in touch with a few Basenji people in the UK.
One actually lives in France now, and apparently there is a glut of Basenji pups in France this year.

  • Hey,
Thank you, although I will not be adopting a dog any time soon. I was just wondering how common these dogs are in the UK for future reference.

  • I don't think that you would have any difficulty finding a Basenji breeder in the UK.
As for rescued Basenjis, I would imagine that they have homeless Basenjis there too, but I don't know how you'd go about finding one.

  • Thank you.
What is your opinion of owning one? Are they as difficult to live with as some people have made out?

  • They are absolutely adorable to live with! People warned us when we got our first pup (we have mature two sisters now) but we fell in love with the breed and have no regrets. You have to be patient, though, with lots of humour, because they WILL test you.

@elbrant That's how all my 8-some learned to catch. If food dropped on the floor - you lost it ! So they all stood on their hind legs and it was like feeding a nest of fledgling sparrows. A gentle toss of the treat and someone caught it !

Hi @2baroos , the vet has checked for a UTI and she is healthy. I have tried thunder jackets with her and she tears it off with assistance from her companion. I'm afraid she will certainly remove anything we put on her, especially diapers. We're trying to discourage her from peeing in the crate at all. She used to sleep in a cardboard box that she loved and started to completely destroy it once the anxiety started, now she shreds her bedding and pees on it. I know how this must be really upsetting to her and am trying my best to take care of her.

Most people incorrectly use the terms dominant and dominance with regard to dogs. Here is a good blog post by Dr. Sophia Yin on the topic. http://drsophiayin.com/blog/entry/dominance_in_dogs_is_not_a_personality_trait
