  • Hi all,

I recently found you on the web. I have two Basenji's Buddy (male) and Riley (female). They are both 3 years old.

We rescued Buddy when he was 11 monts when his original owner died. He was such a handful that we almost got rid of him but people kept saying get two. So alittle over a year ago we rescued Rily through B.R.A.T. She was living with pit bulls in Kentucky. Don't believe anyone when they tell you two are easier. It just becomes a different kind of job. But they have settled down somewhat.

We spend about an hour a day at the dog park which helps alot. But is it gets cold here we'll have to find activities at home.

  • Hi Mike, welcome to the forum. Your Basenjis are gorgeous. I feel fortunate that mine is only half basenji (she's still a handful) and I've often wondered how people with the pure breeds manage, especially if you own multiple basenjis. I am especially glad to hear you rescued your basenjis.

Hi Mike, Welcome to the forum. I think basenji's do better in pairs, if raised together as pups. Bringing adult dogs together is an entirely different ballgame and does require more attention. Good to hear they've settled down, keep working on it and over time hopefully things will work out fine. Kudos on the rescue, good looking B's.

  • Hi Mike… Welcome to forums... Happy you found us !!!!

Please research the health problems in Basenjis especially Fanconi Syndrome! There is a DNA cheek swab test for it and I believe it only costs $75. If your dog has not been tested and is over two years old, she needs to be strip tested for glucose in the urine monthly until you have the DNA test done and obtain the results. Untreated Fanconi Syndrome will kill a dog! Here is a webpage that explains health problems in Basenjis: https://www.basenji.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=155&Itemid=292 Jennifer

Welcome! I have seen red and white Shibas that looked just like a long haired basenji. You could have a shiba-basenji mix, perhaps. He is a very cute dog, I see why you are in love. They are hard to resist! For about $60 there is a DNA test if you are really curious…..

Sorry, no, I'm in San Diego. But if you ever head South…:D It looks like there's a pretty active club up in your neck of the woods. Maybe they have meetups you could join? Not so much here, that I know of, though a lovely woman I met through Karen has 3 b's in a community near here. We have 2 basenji mixes in our neighborhood that we've discovered (your dog will find those for you if you take her to a dog park or a popular walking area). Congrats again - can't remember if your post said this was your first B, but aren't they just amazing?
