For Laura ( yodels2u) .. seeing breeder, wants 2 puppies

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • @yodels2u:

I live in Pasadena, California. I just recently lost my 14 year old basenji to cancer. Me and my husband have had two basenjis that we have given the best life possible. We would love to have two puppies. I have a toddler in my life who lived with us for two years. She learned how to give him treats, make him sit and then give him his treats. Me and my husband are missing not having pups in the house. we have had 14 years of basenji experience. I am checking around for avaiable basenjis. If anyone can direct us to a reputable breeder, please do. Thank you.

With the delay in posts showing up, thought I'd help Laura by making her a separate thread.

  • Maybe Pat (Tanza) can be of assistance since she is on the west coast…I don't know when she will breed again but perhaps she has some
Good referrals for the upcoming season

  • Best suggestion is for them to visit breeders in So. California. I am breeding this year, but already have more reservations then puppies expected. Best to go to www.basenji.org

Go to the Basenji Club of America's web site (BCOA). To find Basenji breeders go to the Breeder Directory. Breeders are listed by state. Contact the Breeder Liaison as she keeps an additional list of breeders that do not breed often and do not want their names openly advertised. https://www.basenji.org/index.php/about-basenjis/breeder-directory

The only place I know in the UK that actually requests copies of health certificates from breeders is www.champdogs.co.uk I am sure if there are other sites and or places someone will be quick to correct me, but this is the only one I know. Hope that helps.

Are you saying he's breeding brother to sister, or just remarking he has them? Don't put all your eggs in one basket... bitches miscarry, have one pup, lots of things. As for whelping, I thought you said breeding and had to reread. The southern hemisphere is about 6 mos later for estrus. The below paper, I wonder if they followed up to see if basenjis are losing seasonal cycles. For the most part, estrus occurs within the months of September and October for Basenjis living in the Northern Hemisphere. Breeders have also noticed a second estrus sometimes occurs around March or April. In England many Basenjis have a second estrus (Burns, 1952). This has created some concern that the Basenji is losing its annual cycle since leaving Africa. The tendency for a second annual cycle has existed in Africa and in the Bitches imported from Africa.... https://www.basenji.org/african/joha0210.htm

I would look at the BCOA site for reputable breeders in your area, but don't be quick to rule out others. A lot of good breeders have all their puppies spoken for by now, so that will make your search much harder. But keep looking and don't be afraid to contact folks from all over. The most important thing is to find a good breeder that you can work with personally, and one who does significant health testing, including the new DNA marker for fanconi. A happy healthy puppy and supportive relationship with a breeder are priceless! I do know some folks will ship, but the best thing to do is go out and get the dog. You will probably want to meet the breeder and litter, and they will want to meet you. That way you can get a better feel for each other and both still have an "out" if things don't seem right. For about the same price as shipping a dog, you can get a plane ticket yourself to get them. It usually only costs about $50 or so to add the dog in cabin on your return trip. And then you are in complete control the whole time of what is happening to your puppy. Also sometimes breeders that live outside your area still have ways to make transportation arrangements. You can always check. They know other breeders that live between you two and can meet up with them at shows or events to get the puppy closer to it's new home, or within a reasonable driving distance of you. My first dog came from Georgia, but I only had to go to KY to get him. :)
