Our first basenji

Member Introductions
  • Hello. We got our basenji about 6 weeks ago and her name is Roxy :) She is now 13 weeks old. It's nice to have a place to chat with other basenji owners since no one I know has any idea of what a basenji is. :)

  • Welcome to this great forum, roxysmom. I can relate with you as I am a 1st time basenji owner and no friends who have or heard of Basenji either. You'd have to read my intro for my story. But I have learned so much here. Duke is about 10 mos old now. Best wishes with your 1st steps in training Roxy. A big bottle of Nature's Miracle will help you. :)

  • Welcome to Basenjiland 101. This forum covers it all and I wish I had known more when I first took on a Basenji. I'm thankful it is here now and love learning. Congrats on your new addition and I'm sure you will have some funny stories to share..Basenjis are as comical as they are challenging!

  • Welcome to our basenji haven. I too got a basenji/mix without knowing anything about the breed. Thanks to the wonderful folks on this forum, I am learning and have a wealth of knowledge from which to draw, thanks to all the experienced basenji owners here at the forum.

  • Welcome, this forum is lots of fun and GREAT information about Basenjis, of course!

  • Welcome, great dogs, great people, great information….great fun.:)

Post some pics when you can;)

Delighted that Kane is finally on the mend - you will see his weight gain in leaps and bounds now he no longer has those unwelcome little visitors. Keep a close eye on him though and get back to the vet at the first sign of any more troubles. good luck to you both !

I have to go read your link, but having been called to the shelter to see a chow that was an overweigh pomeranian, a rottweiler that was a lovely hound dog (Rottie rescue in FL told me keep quiet, they knew it wasn't a rottie but had a good home so just get it. I expected a LITTLE Rottweiler looking... bahahaha, no.)... vets who thought our basenjis were so many other things, not much surprises me.

Welcome! I know exactly how you feel, I got my first basenji last year from Kathy and don't know how I lived without him. I too planned on getting another in a few years, I buckled and got a second this year :) Now I don't know how I ever lived without the two of them! You met my dog Dude's littersister Searsha in NJ I believe, her momma and I keep in touch and talk about how the pups are growing up :) Your little Willow was a sweetheart from day one, I got to visit the puppies a few times. Her momma is also the biggest LOVE, she was the first basenji I met and look where I am now :)

Hi Anne - Thanks for checking in on us. Kona is settling in perfectly. She is so sweet and only causes trouble a couple times a day - mainly when my husband isn't home :) She traveled with us to Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando over the Thanksgiving weekend and handled it all very well. She even played beautifully with my nieces and nephew. We are so lucky to have found her and she is the perfect fit for us! We look forward to coming and meeting the other Tampa Basenjis. I am hoping to come to the park after the holidays once Kona is completely caught up on her shots - she goes for round 2 tonight. I will post some more pictures soon too! Lisa

Woah! I can't begin to tell you the noises I hear behind me. The two are going at it . . . because ? ? ? ? They must need each other to remind them that they are dogs. (I think). Zuri is very cute!

Welcome!! I would also add that Basenjis are high energy dogs…umm so good luck having them "calm" down :) But if you exercise them often they will come home to sleep! Which is great down time for you. They will also do these wild sprints around your house/yard/wherver there's space!! We call it the "Basenji 500" because it's JUST as fast as the Daytona 500 or the Indy 500 :)
