• Hello All!

My name is Carlos. I have a beautiful black and white Basenji. Her name is Martina. Martina is in heat and driving me crazy! I live in the city of Barranquilla in Colombia, South America. I don't know of any other Basenji owners in this city or any other for that matter. I want to make sound decisions before we (my wife and I) decide if she should get pregnant, and other health issues and general info. I want to make new friends on here. Hope to hear from someone soon, bye…

  • Hi Carlos!

    Welcome at the basenji forum!

In my opinion it's now too late to decide if you want to be a breeder or not because she is already in heat.
It's important to take enough time to learn all about the breed, to search the lines behind your girl and to get her fully health tested.
Then think of the reason you want to breed (not just fun) and if you are fully sure you want to be a breeder you can take some time to find a good male. Maybe look around your town and try to find our if there is interest in our breed, because you do want to find them good homes when they are 8 or 9 weeks of age 🙂

Breeding is very delicate, there are always risks for the mum and it cost a lot of money but when you love the breed and love to be a part of improve our breed, it's very nice to be a breeder 🙂

This is a great place to find other advice and meet other Basenji lovers!

    Where is your girl from?

  • Welcome! I love black & white basenjis too. Please post some photos of Martina!

Her heat will last about a month from start to finish then she will be back to normal. As Kim says, the decision to breed is complex, lots of health testing not to mention finding a great, healthy male for her. Then finding good, loving homes for the pups is emotionally stressful too! This forum is a wealth of information , we have pet owners and show-dog owners and some wonderful breeders here too.

  • I'm sure Martina is very beautiful but please don't think about breeding from her until all health issues are sorted and you have talked to breeders and others on this forum. You don't say how old she is. Has she had all her health tests? Have you decided how you would find a male if Basenjis are scarce there? Do you think that there are plenty of suitable buyers of puppies remembering that Basenjis have special needs where owners are concerned?
