USDA Licensed Breeder & Dog Auction Rescue

  • I was not sure where to post this at. If it needs to be moved, please do so!

This is not about a Basenji breeder but for those of you interested in buying a puppy or even an adult dog from a breeder, this story will probably be shocking. This blog posting is about a rescuer who attended a dog auction at a breeder's kennel who was going out-of-business in April 2012. The breeder is able to sell to pet stores and of course, can also sell via the internet, newspapers, etc. At a December 2011 inspection, they had 220 adult dogs and 49 pups. The auction also including dogs from other breeders as well.

Please research your breeder and the sire and dam of your puppy and make sure health testing is being done. There have been two dog auctions this past season where breeding Bs have been sold. I have no idea who bought them but I do know that they will be used for breeding this coming season. I doubt all the pups will be sold to pet stores. If you are not buying a pup from a BCOA member, I would ask where the breeder obtained the sire and dam.

    Here is the blog posting:

  • Amen to that Jennifer

  • I forgot to add: Do not buy a puppy from a pet store! I would only do it if the pup was older and was reduced in price significantly and you told the pet store manager/owner not to order/buy Basenjis again as they are not good sellers. If you do buy an older pup remember it will have significant issues especially socialization, house training and health. I have never bought a discounted B pup at a pet store although I almost bought/rescued a 6 month old Shiba Inu but by the time the weekend came he was no longer there and this was before I ever knew about dog auctions and Amish breeders.

@debbie said in reputable breeder?: @tanza yes my mistake it was tested with OKC I got papers to prove it.. she was born with the disease Are you referring to OFA? If so then I would wonder if the pup's sire/dam were not the real sire/dam of the pup you got? Only if they are Afflicted with the Fanconi gene (the pup) would they develop Fanconi? Did the paperwork from OFA say "clear"?

Pam Geoffroy [Eldorado] is President of the BCOA and Debbi Hauri [Mata Hauri] is a longtime Basenji breeder. I am sure you would love a pup from either of them :-)

I'm sorry for your loss. I did not mean to seem overly harsh, but I am glad you found the article eye-opening. I am very sad that you lost your boy so young. Please consider giving a homeless dog a second chance, or buy only from responsible breeders for a pup. it really is worth it. -Nicole

Yes, Arlene, you do need at some point to take a stand and trust what you see and what you like… Breeding comes down to that in the end.... And with a bitch that is only 1 1/2 yrs looking down from the top is not a very good judge... IMO... reason?... They are not mature yet... and they shouldn't be.... their ribs have not even "sprung" at this age.. again IMO.... I would be hard pushed to say a dog is "wider" in the front then the rear at this age by just looking down on them.... again IMO.... Here is a link to 3 pictures of Kobey, 6wks, 3 months and 5 1/2 months... everything I saw on this pup at 6 wks that I liked (and that is a bit early then the 8 wks usually used for evaluating pups) I still see... but there are differences while growing... Now granted this pup is one of the few that has yet to really fall apart with a growing spurt... And also the faults that I saw at 6wks are still there too..... www.tanzabasenjis.net/kobeygrowing.html
