  • Just dropped in to say hello to all.

    Hi Sharon, Bryan, et all… and of course our wonderful Admin.. cute pic!

    For those that don't know me, I am Kathy Britton, the 2nd generation of Khani's Basenjis (Mom is the first gen, EMily is the 3rd gen).
    We are in Portland, Oregon and travel for dog shows and lure trials throughout the pacific NW as well as occasional trips elsewhere.
    I have my first real judging assignment in Indiant coming up this month.. so now I am adding judigng to my plethora of dog activities...
    so much for my spare weekends!

    Well, have to get to packing for the Evergreen specialty weekend..

    @abonnard Pee pads got me through in the end, she would pee every 20 mins for the first months, then 40 mins, then she suddenly went to being able to hold it for many hours. One of the best purchases I got before she arrived was a small carpet washer, saved my sanity. The cleanup is so key otherwise they go back to the same spot.

    @basenjilovers - She is very cute, please make sure that DNA testing was done for Fanconi and PRA. And if not or you are not sure, you can get the test kits at www.ofa.org. You do the test as it is a cheek swab.

    Welcome and congrats on your new addition! I'm no expert, but I would re-think neutering early. I would wait until the growth plates fully close and then neuter him. And I would not say that the breed is susceptible to attacking, though Basenjis can be reserved and cautious with strangers. Most are confident, loving dogs, when socialized. It's always good to keep an eye out for problems, however, and address any aggressive behaviors before they have a chance to escalate. Good luck with him!
