Purring???

When Alriegh lays down next to me on the couch or bed or even sometimes when we're just playing and I grab him he makes this noise that sounds like he's getting ready to whine but he never does. It seems like its a sound of pleasure as he doesn't do it unless we're close and he's happy. It seems as though, if he were a cat, it would be purring. Anyone else have this experience? It's kinda weird but he's a Basenji so that's to be expected.:)

Cody does something like that…. it's almost like a grumble or growl, but he does it when he's happy, or when he's getting his belly rubbed or ears scratched. At first I thought it was a warning, like he wanted me to stop, but then when I did stop, he's look at me like I was mean, lol. Cody has lots of different grumble-noises, so I just labeled that one as is contented-grumble. It is almost as if he's purring though.

My girl does her grumble when she doesn't get her way, but she does have content sound that could be compared to cat purring.

My B kind of does this at times. Mostly when he is tired or cold. Usually at bed time he'll rest his head on my shoulder and grumble. Probably because he wants me to turn off the TV and go to sleep.

Sounds so familiar - I'm a night owl and you should see the looks the dogs give me!! :D

Our boy will purr when he is greeting us. I know this is a happy noise. The 5th B to live with us and the first to purr. He yodels too but most often we get the happy purr. Stroking on his head and ears can increase the length of the purring I love it!

Spring and Gbala (mother and daughter) purr like a cat when I stroke or massage them. It's obviously a sign of contentment

I think Bowpi does something similar to what you're talking about. It's definitely hard to describe. Like a nasally sigh?
We had a BRAT girl stay at our home for a night, and when she tucked into bed with us, I noticed she made that exact same noise! So I did think it was a kind of contented noise. -

The purr I mean seems to come from the throat - very much like a cat purr but a much quieter gentler noise.
