Please tell me they will melt

Basenji Talk

  • I hate my dogs today (okay only the senji).

First, because of her steroids, Sayblee has kept me up for over a week. She can't just get up to get a drink, she has to mess with the chow or the trash. So I have been up hourly. Husband away so last night (he won't put up with screaming so crating at night not option when he is home) at 1:30 I put them in their crates on the far end of the house. I do feel more human today. Not sure she and I are going to survive this month of steroids!

But that's not why I hate them. Though i am sure the fatigue is contributing.

It rained nearly all day yesterday… so they were inside nearly all day. Now its raining today again. No exaggeration, since I THREW them out to potty at 6:30, they have DEMANDED to leave the bedroom and go out about 20 times. I have given in 5 of them. They go to the door, see rain, RUN back to the bedroom. Now, the window in the bedroom is open.. right? They SEE its raining out the front of the house. But NOOOOOOOOO, gotta make sure its raining out the back.

So this last time I threw them out the back door in the rain. I hope they melt. I really do. I'll reconstitute them or dehydrate them into basenji form after the rains stop.

Debra, who is experiencing the flip side of  "tired dogs are good dogs"

  • Goodness you are a mess. Slow down and know there are better days ahead. Good look to you.

  • Oah Debra I am so sorry to hear that they are getting to you. Sounds like things are really hectic right now. Good luck and stay strong. Things will become normal again. (Hopefully soon!)

Everyone needs to talk about a spay/neuter... while in Europe it is not the "norm" to do so... however in the US it is.... that said waiting till the pup is mature is the best... but in the US we have issues with puppymills and Backyard breeders that breed/sell pups for profit... My contracts say that the pup needs to be spayed/neutered... and we talk about the age. Again, I will say that my puppy people are "Vetted" before getting a puppy, but many Puppymiller puppies and/or Backyard Breeders could not care if those pups were bred or not... nor are they health tested... so as they say "buyer beware". Responsible breeders stay in touch with the pups they place... the others... NOT... could not care less... OK I said my 2cents... And many in the US are not ready to keep a female that is in season... a short story about a friend that had 2 German Shepards... Male/Female in tact.... female came in season, so they locked to male in the backyard, female in their garage... the male "ate down the door to the garage to get to the female..".... puppies happened... no health testing either... IT HAPPENS... DO NOT THINK THAT IT WILL NOT! And I can tell you stories about males coming through windows in the home to get to a bitch in season....years ago we had a 12yr in-tact male lab 3 blocks over, he knew exactly when my Basenji bitches were in season... thankfully we had 12ft fences... but he was there every single day... not so for many homes that have fences this big... and if this boy was younger... I can bet he would have found a way over the fence

I am so glad they both returned..scary. I was told a long time ago to make sure you walk you dog past your house in the front so they know/recognize where they live, if they only see a backyard, yet get out on the front, they don't know which house is theirs..makes sense.

Thank you for all of the advice, well wishes & prayers. We are very very fortunate to have such a sweet friend in mauigirl. She not only cooked me breakfast Friday & let me borrow her Zip to make me feel better about leaving Lola in a stranger's hands, she battled rush hour traffic to pick up my baby since I had to be at work unexpectedly. I couldn't get out of work & over to pick Lola up until 2am, but I found her safe & sound. She was very very happy to see me, and adorable in her large e-collar. She came home & instantly jumped on the bed (grrr). She slept well, and has just been a little subdued this evening as her morning pain meds have worn off. You were all right… I was overly worried for nothing. The hardest part is keeping her still. Funny story... I was in a rush this morning to get to work, and didn't make time to reassemble her crate from her stay at mauigirl's. I put a blanket in the bathroom floor & closed her in with her e-collar on. Came home 4 hours later, opened the bathroom door & she rushes out, minus e-collar. She chewed through one of the loops on the collar & through two loops of string used to tie it on to her neck. She has decided she will not wear an e-collar. We're watching her closely, and so far she hasn't messed with her incision so hopefully we won't need to go buy another one. Didn't even last one morning...
