Scratching and moisturizer

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Can I use a topical moisturizer (for example, argan oil) on Kipawa? Or maybe another moisturizer? Any suggestions for one?

The air has been drier and hotter in our home, due to winter. :) His skin is a little dry and itchy. Kipawa hasn't had a bath since the summer, so I know it is not irritation from a dog shampoo. I had been using salmon oil capsules (dripped on his food) but we could not get away from the loose poops when we were using it.

The vet says there are no fleas present. No signs of a bacteria or yeast, etc. No switches in dog food or treats.

  • Give Kipawa fish oil daily. I give Buddy organic chicken thighs as well as part of his meals and his coat is great. The thighs are the fattier part. I rotate and give Buddy different foods. No dry food though, only wet.

  • I use vitamin E oil as a topical when the kidz skin is truly itchy. It is super in the cold conditions. In fact, when using it on the kidz, my hands were immediately improved - so it was a win win.

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

I kept my basenji girl from scratching at her stitches by dressing her in a very small child's T-shirt. It worked well. Sometimes covering up a wound is all that's needed. Unfortunately, sometimes not. Naomi had a little T-shirt that boasted the lettering "Dirt is my favorite color." It was not of course; she was a very tidy girl.

Bookworm, just a hint, our petco and petsmart down here in Texas will take back food even if it has been opened, so if somethings doesn't work out you might be able to return it.

A visit to the vet will be worthwhile. Skin problems can be difficult to resolve. My two actually have a dermatologist now that my vet referred me to to try to figure out why their skin isn't clearing up after two months of treatment. My regular vet did skin scrapings to check for things like mites (which they don't have). Mine are getting more skin scrapings next week to be cultured to see what exact bacteria is there and check for something like ringworm.
