Had to give up my B's - and I miss them

Member Introductions
  • To spare you all the crappy details –- let's just say that upon finding out about my husband and his "girlfriend", I decided it was time for me to leave the marriage.

I also decided that it was best for me to start clean and the emotional attachment I had to our 2 beautiful basenji's was too much for me....and I couldn't pick one over the other or even think about separating the 2.

So, here I am, alone and looking for a new basenji to fill one of the holes in my heart.....Here's hoping I find a cute little bugger to warm up to me and love me unconditionally for who I am --- I know basenji's are great at that...their yodels tell me so!

Here's hoping I can find a cute pup!
    Cheers!

  • Hi 6_kristy! Welcome to Basenji Forums!

If you are looking for a new basenji you should post a wanted ad in the Basenjis For Sale or Wanted thread. We have a lot of great breeders and BRAT member that can help you out.

  • welcome! (I'm new too)

that was a sad story, I wish you the best of luck finding the right b to start the next chapter in your life with.

  • Also, if you're looking for an "older" basenji that might make your life easier. There are lots of basenjis who are done showing and are in need of a home. Also, BRAT could help you with finding you a basenji that may have come from the same type of circumstances that you had with your two. Good luck!

  • a crappy a**hole like that doesnt deserve two great basenjis!! sorry to hear you had to part with your pups! GOOD LUCK finding a new one and starting another better chapter!!

Thank you for saying these wonderful things about the mature Bs. My Black Magic lived to 171/2 and only started going down the last 6 months of her life. There is plenty of love in the B's without so much of the puppitis that infects them until age 5 or 6! Cherry just wants to do what is best for these 4. So thank you for the words and send anyone searching to us to get them connected. God Bless, Dawn

Hello again after a very long absence!! My 'chewing' boy now leaves his coat alone - his Mum (now spayed) wears his old hand-me-down coat, and he has his onw snazzy camoflage polar fleece jumper that I made. Can't possibly have it off thankyou!! His half-brother Jerry had his first coat on today - also a 'chewer' - we'll see if it is still on in the morning. Jerry's sister Chloe also got one on today after I managed to keep her still enough to pull it over her head!! Jerry is NOT allowed to touch it thank you!! @kiwir: The thing that annoys me is that he always wore a coat as a puppy - he's just turned 12 months now. But boys being boys, in the last few weeks he thought Mum had come back in season (she hadn't!) so in frustration he gradually chewed her coat - from the back forward - left the polar fleece around her shoulders and chest and neck. And the silly girl just let him - looking at him indulgently - "My boy" I tried making them without the polar neck (designed to stop chewing of the front) - or reinforced them with thick cotton tape - and that lasted a little longer. Now he just looks at me with those eyes saying "Hell, I'm freezing Mum!"

Before you get a puppy… go to the Basenji Club of Canada and Basenji Club of America websites and read up on Fanconi and other heritable diseases. ANY breeder not testing for these disease is NOT someone you should spend your time or money on one of their puppies. Too bad you didn't look 4-5 months ago... there was a lovely litter of Khani's pups up in Drumheller! Best of luck to you!

Welcome Jackie. The ideas about leaving Akila alone for a short time and then lengthening the time have worked in the past for us. The soft things with familiar smell also should help. One other trick we have tried is to leave a TV or radio on at low levels. Talk radio or TV seems to work, but not too loud! Welcome back to the wonderful world of Basenjis Tom

Yep, we do agree on most things (bossy? or boss?)(both I think-it has something to do with me being a control freak-I like orderly fashion). True there are some dogs/bitches that will just not get along EVER. If I do leave with dogs that typically don't get along-grouch,snarl,sneer,etc.-I'm sorry-but they're separated. Either in separate rooms or crates. If you can't get along when I'm here, then chances are you won't when I'm not!! I did train other people and their dogs (notice I put people first) but as you say-meager. Now I just train my own, the occasional consult and focus on grooming, and the B's. I would love to make a living with just dogs, but, alas, that is really hard to do!
