This boy is in the Tacoma shelter and will probably be put down today. He bit 5 folks, including his owner and put 2 in the hospital. The owner wouldn't do the responsible thing and put him to sleep…she listed him on CL and they turned him out.
Sigh.
Shame on her.. That poor dog never had a chance. She got the b for her teenage son and he never did any training expcept what he was on TV. Sigh. -

Had Patty posted this dog before, when he was on Craigslist? His story up to the part about being turned out and ending up on the euth list at a shelter sounds familiar…
Or maybe it's familiar because I've read too many Craigslist ads now. It's sad all around. I'm sorry this had to get to this point.

The worst thing for all is the gal who took him in when he was wondering around loose doesn't understand why rescue can't take him in. It has knocked her for a loop and all I can tell her is we can't save the biting dogs. Sigh.
She thinks I am evil for not helping this boy, and I tried to tell her that this is the best thing for this boy and ANY family who wanted to get a dog..sigh, sometimes rescue sucks! -

He's 9-10 years old! And what happened all the years before? Maybe his thyroid is low or he's got some other sickness making his behavior bad. Did the owner take the dog to the vet for a check up?

Dan, this owner didn't do ANYTHING but give this basenji to a teenage boy. I mean COME ON!!!!!! What teen has time to take a dog to gentle classes? The basenji lived in that house for 9 yrs, biting folks when they pushed him too far. So, this dog got nothing, and when the kid left, the owner gave him away. Why, cause she didn't want to live with him and passed this damaged dog on. Its a shame that the folks she gave this boy to didn't sue her. I wish they would! Sigh. Sorry, I am so darn angry about this.
Sorry for the rant. I hate lose/lose -

All of this makes me sick. You are right Sharron. This must be the hardest part of rescue work.
Dan, you're right. There could be an illness involved. I hardly think a 10 year old dog was that way all it's life. Humans take their children to the doctor when something goes wrong - when they notice their kids are acting strange. How sad that this dog could have been helped.
