Wanting a local breeder… Help???

    Hello fellow Basenji lovers! I am looking for a reputable breeder here in Alaska. Anyone have a good contact? I am willing to go to Seattle if I must. Finding one here would be fabulous though. I want one by Christmas for my kids (9&4). They have been asking for a dog for three years, and I have done my research, and want this amazing breed! Thanks to any and all for your help!;)

    Have you ever met a basenji? There are few good breeders in British Columbia as well.

    Contact the Basenji Club of America for breeders list and consider adopting through BRAT (Basenji Rescue and Transport). That said, I really don't consider a basenji a great first dog for children that age–Not your typical dog for sure.

    If you are interested in visiting a Basenji in person… feel free to email me and we can get that set up for you. There are a number of Khani's Basenjis in Alaska and I am sure their folks would love to share their babies with you. This would give you a better idea if you really do want a Basenji.

    jeannieJ, is your dog tattooed? You might at least be able to find out something about him if he is. Breeding is not a good idea unless you are experienced, know all about the breed's history and health concerns, and are willing to be responsible for any resulting puppies for the rest of their lives!

    Try to find somewhere that offers the IDEXX snap 4DX test. It tests for heartworm as well as lyme, erlichia and anaplasmosis. The last 3 are all rickettsial diseases that can cause behavioral changes as well. If medical causes are ruled out, there is a great group on yahoo groups called agbeh. It is the Aggressive behaviors in dogs group.     @wizard: I use newspapers in the crate - Luny destroys it everyday (doesn't eat it as far as I can tell) but the ink does get on their paws so you have to be sure to wash them or you'll get the ink transferred everywhere else they walk (newspaper ink is made from corn or soybean so it won't harm them either). If you want to use newspaper and don't want to worry about the ink, you can buy the end of the rolls at you local newspaper. That is what I buy when we have pups. They usually measure how many inches are left on the roll and charge accordingly.

    Wondering how your two are taking to each other now. We've had Bongo for just over 3 weeks - seems like so much longer - and he and Fiji are now a real team. Wish I'd had the camera handy last night when they were sleeping on the couch with Bongo draped over Fiji. (The first week they'd share the couch but at far opposite ends.) They walk together, run together and share toys and bowls. She still puts him in his place if he messes with her crate, or crosses some other line that only the b's know and understand, but he takes it like a dog. I'm actually surprised, and thrilled of course, that they bonded so quickly. How are yours coming along?
