Injection ?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hello All!

It looks like I will be able to stay in Edinburgh this summer, which is excellent because that is what I really wanted. However the work I'll be doing for school this summer will require me to be away for most day hours during August. I have arranged for Lycia to be in daycare throughout the period, but they don't take unspayed bitches in heat in the group. I called my local vet who told me about about getting an injection for her which would suppress her heat. This would be ideal but I wanted to see if anyone on the board had any experience with this procedure. I have made an appointment for a consultation with the prestigious Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies for further information.

  • Lauren, they removed Check drops, the most used heat delaying hormones here in the USA, a few years ago. I don't really know why. You all can get Delvosteron Injections, but it isn't available through the USA branch of Intervet. :( It looks safe. Is that the one they will use? Even Ovaban was removed from market.

Will they let her go with the shot or will you have to say she is spayed to do it?

I know many who used the Check drops to suppress heats, myself included. My Rottie bitch cycled every 4 mos and the repro vet thought giving her ovaries a rest would help since 2 breedings didn't take. (It must have, had a litter of 8 after she came off it!)

  • I wasn't given the name of the injection, but I doubt there could be many right ? Anyway, I talked to my local dog shop owner, and they said their friend's dog did excellent on it..The dog walkers will let her in the group as long as she isn't in heat.

I suppose it depends on the dog, much like us. It's good to know they have been used. I haven't heard of Check drops here, but I will ask about them.

  • You may want to join the yahoo group Basenji Breeder Roundtable and ask your question there. There may be more collective experience there with this sort of question.

@serenjane My Kembe had the freckles on her neck - more pronounced in summer months w/ the sun and also as she aged. I use to call her my little 🦒 giraffe. 😂

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

Dale Are you using Vetsulin insulin???? I had problems regulating my 13yo male. Come to find out, the FDA has warned vets to change dogs over to a different kind of insulin. Has something to do with the release time of the crystalline portion of the drug. We had the WORST time at first giving shots,( and I'm a certified phlebotomist and went thru nursing school) My boy was fine at the vets we they did it…..difference is he was up on the exam table. We got a table for Einstein, put a bath mat on it so he wouldn't slip around. Biggest thing that helped was getting BD needles, the ones that come from the vets are carp-ola, they have burrs etc...the only thing you have to do is change the number of units you use.(if your using Vetsulin U40 compared to U100 for human insulin and BD needles.) I can explain in further detail if you want. It did take both myself and my husband to get him used to the shots, be we had a very specific routine that we did not alter. Einstein knew that after he ate it was "time for his medicine" he would run over to his table and try to jump up there himself. If we were taking too long, he'd come get us. Freezed Dried Liver was used to get him on the table, then when he was done, given while he was still on the table. I made sure he could see the liver. When he was done and off the table, he got his (small) KONG filled with fat free cream cheese mixed with some tuna mmmmmmmm. My little puppy-cat loved tuna. Anyway, I went from crying during the shot, to smiling and laughing 'cause he was so funny trying to get on the table, and then doing his little dance when he got his kong. I really think the table helped... Please let me know if I can help any more, I can describe the contraption (sp) I built on top of his metal crate, so I could give the shot by myself when needed. He didn't seeem to mind getting the shots at all, I think he trusted and knew we would never do anything to hurt him, plus we made a HUGE DEAL out of telling him what a good boy he was....etc......people would have thought we were bananas LOL Good Luck PJ
