Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I haven't disappeared from the planet. Been so busy unable to write new posts but I find it interesting reading what is written about Fanconi particularly as so much of the advise given is often contradictory. Why is that?

  • Such as what?

  • What do you find contradictory? I have seen irresponsible breeders post no need to test as "they don't have it in their lines" or "test not worth anything"… but most responsible breeders and owners tell you to do the linkage test (especially if breeding, but should be by everyone), strip monthly and follow the Protocol if your dog develops fanconi.

  • Do you mean medical advice about treatments?

  • Read all the quotes and statements on Fanconi and work out how contradictory it is for yourself. I don't think many UK Basenji owners do a Fanconi 'strip monthly' and certainly some breeders do advocate no test. Are such breeders irresponsible not necessarily. A 'probable' diagnosis on any medical condition is hardly a scientic diagnosis to say the least but testing is better than not and is certainly better than doing nothing.

@italeigha I've tagged this pamphlet before so you may wish to search the forum for the link which may still work. https://my.puppyculture.co.uk/resources/flipbook/spay-neuter-booklet It's full of facts and studies and Liz McCargo uses it as her reference. There's a free read-only version if you'd search: PUPPY CULTURE SPAY/NEUTER BOOKLET. Title page attached, if allowed. [image: 1640079058258-2.jpg]

@toeloop840 Sadly we fought it for 7 months and lost her. She was my heart dog and the prognosis was for a year or more but she simply crashed with every new protocol. None of us figured in her autoimmune issues. Hopefully you can get your dog eating. Cyproheptadine is fairly cheap if your vet will write a script. The other one.. blanking on it.. isn't very expensive either.

I decided not to use the plaque off..I have been brushing more but not everyday as I will going forward. I think I decided not to because last year a I expected to have his dental and sort of fix the problem that way and start good habits..then his surgery happened and really it's taken a good long while to get him back on track…I didn't want to add anything that could throw off his system.

Just read this entire thread and my goodness!!!! What a wonderful load of memories you'll have of her, what a trooper! No words for feelings at this time, just prayers and time for your healing. But what a gal! indeed!

@Nemo: Zoni is now conditioned to wake up when the alarm goes off, crawls out from under the covers, stares at the nightstand as I get the marshmallow out, and then retreats back under the covers to go back to the sleep after she has had her pill. It's a pretty smooth process now. :D laugh They learn quick, don't they? Sounds a lot like my shiba. Minus the crawling out from/back under the covers bit. I just hope he doesn't get bored with the ritual since it's gotta work for the rest of his life!
