  • I am a new member to this site. My wife and I have had Basenjis since the 70's. We are a part of the Fanconi web site, as we lost our Fanconi boy basenji, Toby, several years ago at age 6 1/2.. Our basenjis are now rescues from BRAT. We have two presently, we had a third basenjis, Jade, but we lost her at the age of 5 to a brain tumor. Cody is our younger basenji, age 7 and Emma is age 8. Cody has been blind for over a year and a half, due to SRDS at age 5. He does very well and gets around fantastically, although his chasing squirrels days are behind him. Emma is the queen of the house and one of the most affectionate basenjis that we have had. Would like to post some pixs of our basenjis, as soon as I can figure out how to do it.

Most people incorrectly use the terms dominant and dominance with regard to dogs. Here is a good blog post by Dr. Sophia Yin on the topic. http://drsophiayin.com/blog/entry/dominance_in_dogs_is_not_a_personality_trait

Sorry, no, I'm in San Diego. But if you ever head South…:D It looks like there's a pretty active club up in your neck of the woods. Maybe they have meetups you could join? Not so much here, that I know of, though a lovely woman I met through Karen has 3 b's in a community near here. We have 2 basenji mixes in our neighborhood that we've discovered (your dog will find those for you if you take her to a dog park or a popular walking area). Congrats again - can't remember if your post said this was your first B, but aren't they just amazing?

Sorry if we sound so disagreeable … but it is so important that the health of our breed is #1 on everyones list and that everyone understands and does as much health testing as possible before breeding... especially since we have genetic problems that we can't test for, the family tree becomes our only way of knowing what we might expect... and it is only fair to people thinking about getting a Basenjis as a family companion that they know what they might expect..... Everyone should visit the BCOA Health site (www.basenjihealth.org) and learn what is being done to find genetic testing and what everyone can do to help
