Cicular skin rash

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • hello,
my husband and i have had our Burma for 2 years now and never new what kind of dog she was, we called her our abadong dog :p
today some people asked us if she was basenji and i looked into it and she fits everything!! except her tail is straight and she barks/howls…
    however...
she has had this skin issue for about a year now, it is circle red patches on her skin, mainly on her belly and under arms... we took her to the vet last summer and they gave us some antibiotics which we completed and the patches went away only to return a few months later... :(
i have tried using healthy coat dog food and putting apple cider vinegar in her water and using oatmeal shampoo... nothing helps them. oh and she has dandruff around her butt top of tail area.
anyone know about this or have any recommendations?

    thank you!
    nic

  • I would try tea tree oil. Medjai had a rash for awhile and that is the only thing that fixed it, and I tried everything.

  • Did they do a skin scraping for mites? And what food are you feeding? Does it have corn in it? Many dogs have food allergies to many grains, corn being a big one.

  • I used a fish oil vitamin that I punctured and rubbed directly on red tummies on 2 Bs and it seems to work. i also just bought Funky Dog Balm on a BRAT member's recommendation, all organic, and it really worked well. If not mites, these might help. My Cory was allergic to lamb & rice, both broke him out big time. We now feed Call of the Wild Venison & Bison which we purchase at TSC, Tractor Supply Co. Keep away from corn, wheat grains as much as possible. Dawn

  • Be careful about tree tree oil… it was wildly popular til they found many issues and reactions to it.
    San Francisco State University:

Common herbs that are potentially dangerous for use in animals

Pennyroyal (very toxic to dogs and cats)
White Willow bark (salicylates may be toxic to cats)
    Garlic (Heinz body anemia)
Tea Tree oil (VERY toxic to cats and small dogs)
Ma Huang (cats have idiosyncratic reactions)
    Comfrey (cause liver damage)
    Hops (in greyhounds

If the antibiotics cleared it up, then it almost has to be bacteria related or it would not have cleared up. BUT could be allergy start and then bacterial developement.

If you can, go to a university vet school for exam so they can help look at diet and other issues, as well as skin scraping etc.

they said that the vet did do a skin scraping, i dont recall them saying for mites. she eats beneful healthy radiance dry dog food-we thought that could help her skin stuff…

You might want to try a better quality food and one without any grains, there are a number of them. And you should check and make sure that she was checked for mites. If you call your Vet they should have it on her records.

@prasadvaze There are wipes which you can use instead of baths, I imagine most of them neutralize odors and have a fresh scent. Perhaps try those? Mine have always had no detectable smell except after I bath them, then they smell “doggy” for a day or so. Here are a couple of ones I looked up but I have never tried any. https://www.chewy.com/natures-miracle-spring-waters/dp/108468 https://www.chewy.com/tropiclean-deep-cleaning-deodorizing/dp/128836 What kind of smell / odor?

Olive oil works very quickly; cleared up my dogs dry skin in less than two weeks (though I put it in food) and is relatively cheap. Three table spoons a week I think is what vets have recommended. The high fat can cause some laxative issues though. You don't likely need fish [cod] oil after that, though if you have a decent fish source….never hurts as a supplement. Especially salmon. If you're neurotic about your dog's health [ as there is some controversy surrounding Olive oil], and wanting to pull out all the stops, just go straight for the fish oil.

Hi All, Thought i'd give you a little update! My lil lady had her food changed from Eukanuba medium pup to Royal Canin Mini (she's a very small basenji and doubt she'll get bigger than 10k when fully grown so thought this one best) I also bought her a Pet Head shampoo 'Royal Treatment' with oatmeal and aloe. She loves her new food and never leaves a crumb now, has a bath once every two weeks (instead of every week) and has a treat of sardines or yogurt every couple of days. Her skin is much better, little flaking and her coat looks much better now. Thank you guys for all the advice!

Spencer gets that on his thighs sometimes in the summer. I thought it was a heat rash, but maybe he's been around prickly stuff in the yard. I rub a little lotion on it, and he seems to think that's the equivalent of a doggy massage. I watch him to make sure he doesn't lick it off, and the red is usually gone in a day.

Mmmmm think I might have spoken too soon, Java was having cuddles with me yesterday evening, and the horrible dandruff is back, BUT, only on him ??? I had reduced all the dogs fish oil capsules, from daily, to 2-3/week, so Im wondering if thats why ??? Will start him up on daily and see if that makes a difference… I hate dandruff :(...

@Maxie: Hi Tommy, My Basenji has that from time to time. Not inside, just on the ear flaps. Some people call it Winter Ears, but I'm not sure what the name of this problem is. Tried many things, but here's what worked for me. Thoroughly cleaned outside of her ears with ear cleaner from a pet store. Let dry, then used olive oil daily until it cleared up. Let me know if that works for you. Yup, it's just on the inside of the flaps. It's going away VERY slowly. I'll try the olive oil treatment…...thanks!
