Friesian Update!

Off Topic

  • Thought i'd do a little update on Una my friesian. Some people may remember that this time last year I just started breaking her. The first time i'd ever broken a horse so it was rather scary  But, everything went perfectly, Una is an angel!

This year i've not done too much with her. She is going to stud in the spring so I just wanted her to get used to the basic commands and be hacking out happily I had no plans to over do things with her as she is still very young. We did try a bit of jumping (pictures below!) only once as i never got round to doing it again, but she loved it and i hope that might be something she will take to as thats what I love to do :D

I've been riding her maybe once or twice a month for the last 6 months or so, just to keep her brain a bit busy. I will mostly be turning her away for the winter as the evenings are just too dark to ride her after work and im at dog shows most weekends!

Anyway, here she is taken today, just to show what a mess she looks :o

(BTW she has had that rug on 24/7 for an entire week, just look how immaculate it is :D)

    And this was last weekend:

Check out the view from on board!!

From November when she started to get fuzzy:

    October:

And these are going back to August, from the day I jumped her! The jumping pics are video stills so a bit fuzzy…!! Only tiny jumps as she'd never done anything like it before, but didnt she do well? :D

  • How old is she? She is lovely!

  • She is 4 & 1/2 :D Well, she is 5 in March/April technically, but i keep saying 4 & 1/2

  • What a beauty Jess!
Looks like she is doing wonderfully.

She looks so nice. I love how stable she looks. The jumps are great, hey you have to start somewhere right?

  • I'm so jealous! I haven't been able to ride in ages. Super expensive in the city to own a horse and hard to find a place that let's you actually lease a horse… walking trail rides get to be a bore after a while. She looks so pretty and great work with her :) If she needs exercise cause of your work schedule, have you tried seeing if there's an equestrian program in your area with a student willing to do some riding? Sometimes they get credit if it matches up with their program or they might like the chance just to practice their schooling :) Unless you're planning to be the only rider, just thought I'd suggest it. Keep up the good work!

Maya has caught a pigeon out of the air once, she jumped about 4ft from a standstill and grabbed it, then didnt seem to know what to do with it! That was when she was just a puppy too..! So i am very careful if i do have her out with the birds (very rarely), she is kept on a very short lead and not left out of my sight for a second. She has never attempted to grab at them but she is a bit to fascinated by them for my liking..! :D Ruby will look like this as an adult: [image: 2362033537_a4abc5e17b.jpg] [image: 3534770357_90b7ed532f.jpg?v=0] Not a whole lot different to how she is now, she will lose the blue ring around her neck and instead will have a red ring going around the top of her neck and just a blue nape instead of the blue ring. She will also lose the black feathers in her red chest. Really she will just have clearer colours than she does now, the baby colours are not as bright and vibrant and have a lot of black/blue feathers mixed in with the other colours.

@dmcarty: I typically only breed when I have some good home lined up as well. But when I started to investigate the breed - there were 19 Podengo Grande Smooth registered in the world. So I started the project to see what we in the US could do to increase the numbers and to motivate those breeders in Portugal to register their dogs. We are starting to see some success and never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have 11 puppies. I do have some homes and some will go to different parts of the US for breeders of other size Podengo to show off, I have a few that are staying by me and a friend has offered to take in a couple to continue socializing when I have to go back to school in the fall. Once they get their shots and I can get them out and about - I think I will see some interest. My good friend Wendy (Harehill Hounds) has been very helpful in building some interest in the Beezer community as well. It really sounds that you know what you are doing, so everything will turn out fine , I am sure about that! meanwhile you can show us loads of pictures of the bunch :D

@Ninabeana26: Also good to hear such a positive update about your furkids! How ever did you get to the point where you could leave dash uncrated during the day while you are gone?!? I want to get Dallas like that buy I worry that he will destory everything he can get to in time… Well, we didn't have much of a choice. He would freak out so bad in a regular crate he would make his feet bleed and pee everywhere and the expen he learned to lift it up and tip it so he could sneak underneath. So we decided it was a good time to try it and he has been happy ever since.
