Good Chewing

Basenji Talk
  • I indulged by stopping on the way home from the park for some cooked to order Publix 'hot and spicy wings' and beer, and saw a package (not made in China) of long rawhide rolls, 2 big ones, on the 1/2 price rack. These suckers are about 12 inches long and 1 1/2 or 2 inches diameter. Now, I am not a fan of rawhide chunks, I have pulled big ones out of Topper's throat, but my guys have gotten very jaded and have bully sticks lying all over so I thought I'd see if these fired them up.

Safe to say they like them as they have not stopped chewing on them for over an hour! Nicky actually had to stop and pant as she was chewing so vigorously. Eddie is starting to get his unrolled, not a good thing, and taking these away from them may be dangerous! ;-). Not bad for $3.50!

Good chewing on a hot afternoon!

Just wanted to give an update on my experience and hope that it helps others in the future. So I did get the puppy and have had her now for about 6-7 weeks. She is doing AWESOME! Shes completely healthy, and at 14-15 weeks, is incredibly obedient. For instance, I take her to the dog park, and she recalls every time I say "Nani come." There are also some agility obstacles in the park which I'm starting to train her on and she does really well with simple things like walking up, down, sitting, staying, gonig through the tunnels, etc… When I give her her food, I make her sit, stay, and give me a fist bump before she can eat, and I'll switch the order up every time. I then say "now you can have it" and then she eats. Its to the point now, where she is in the kitchen, and I'll go to my room, come back in 2-3min, and she is still sitting by the food and hasn't even touched it yet until I give the command. She is doing fantastic! Fantastic with other dogs, fantastic with kids, adults, everything. She doesn't have a tendency anymore either now to chew on things she's not supposed to and when she does get the urge, she looks for her toys. Not sure if this is just because the breed itself is very intelligent, or the breeder, or a mix of both but I couldn't have asked for a better puppy, especially the way she is now at the age of 14-15 weeks. My allergies also do very well around her whcih is HUGE! Not sure if I just got lucky or what, but she is great a puppy for how obedient she is already, her compassion, and her behavior. Just simply amazing :-)

My fave moment was the first day I met my baby girl she was running around with all her siblings and she starts chewing on the corner of a post in the kitchen at her breeders house and looks at me with this sweet B smile and cute soft eyes going to town on this post and I was like… ohhh I see how its gonna be loll! Luckily with training we don't have any issues like that now a days. Once as a puppy she was pissed she was in her cage and her wire crate was too close to the wall she decided to chew and dig a hole into the sheet rock and then the bottom of the plastic tray where she tore up the carpet. She was not interested in her kong or any of her bones she had in her cage, the wall was way more interesting.. now she has a plastic crate that isn't so exposed. She has not had one problem with the crate maybe it feels more homey or something. She is becoming a better dog everyday, I am so proud of her, best baby dog ever! <3

We just got back from 5 days in Maui. Had to put our Laika in a kennel which we found after a long search. It was not easy to leave her there, she did ok we think. But was so glad to see us. We really hated to do this as we adopted her from a kennel 6 month ago. All our travel will now be by car only so we can take her. My husband had to pat everydog he saw in Maui. She is his baby. Thanks all for the responses. I was just curious 'cause I'd never had a dog or known a dog that did this. Someone told me it could be allergies. But with the responses here and the fact that it is only an ocasional thing, probably not. Just a new dog thing I never knew they did.:) Didn't know cats did it either!

Bummer. I will take Joey's plastic away. (Sounds like a title to a song :D) I guess I knew it really wasn't the greatest, but it keeps him busy for a long time. I watch him and he always "seems" to spit out the pieces he breaks off, but I just don't want to have an accident. I am going to try an edible nylabone today and see how long that lasts. Haven't seem him go for the pricky branches yet.
