Happy Valentine's Day (basenji style)

Basenji Talk

  • Oy - what a morning it's been already! With the snow and sleet and general icky weather that PA has been experiencing in the past 2 days, I knew that going to work this morning was not an option as the roads are a real mess. I was looking forward to sleeping in on Valentine's Day morning and getting around to stuff in a leisurely manner - too bad for me Storm had other ideas. Here's his account of Valentine's Day morning at our house:

    Happy Valentine's Day
    by: Stormie Basenji

The hooMom is a little less than pleased with me this morning. It snowed and snowed and snowed here yesterday and then it sleeted all last night and is continuing this morning. That means no work for the sissy hooMom who refuses to drive in inclement weather. She was looking forward to being able to sleep in a little bit this morning - hahahahaha! - didn't happen quite that way! At 5:30 A.M. I woke up and felt an impending emergency potty break was in my future. I got out of the bed and started prancing. The hooMom tried hard to ignore me. I pranced some more. No response. I started whining. This seemed to rouse the hooMom a bit. I put my paw on her head and started to scratch at her. This did the trick. She stumbled out of bed, got dressed while I whined and pranced some more. She stumbles down the stairs all bleary eyed with me and Nikki hot on her heels. She leashes us up and puts on her hat, coat, and gloves - FINALLY! Outside! Boy did I race for the tree line - much to the sleepy hooMom's chagrin - the snow and sleet are very slippery and she wasn't very awake, so coordination was not something she was feeling particuarly keen on. I had to twirl and prance and pace some more before I found the perfect spot. Meanwhile the hooMom is getting pelted with ice pellets and her feet are getting soaked and freezing (the silly woman put on sneakers and not boots - hahahaha!) - I did my business and so did Nik and we drug the hooMom back to the warm house in a hurry. By this time, the hooMom was wide awake and freezing cold and not feeling like she could go back to sleep, so she put on a pot of coffee. I thought it was the perfect time to curl up and nap on the loveseat. So here I am snoozing away - and there's hooMom w/ bloodshot eyes hoping for a caffiene buzz to make her feel a little more hooman. Ahhhhhhh life is good - especially if you're a dog! :)
    Happy Valentine's Day everypup!

-Stormie - it was better than leaving her a surprise "present" on the living room floor, wasn't it?! ;) :)

  • Very cute…...ha ha ha. Happy V-day R&WF:) Enjoy the day off in the snow!

  • Happy valentine's Day Stormie,
My morning started different today too. Daddy stayed in bed today instead of turning the nasty light on and waking Mom and I. Then I had my morning cuddle with both my people. That was nice. When we went downstairs to go potty, Mom opened the door, walked out on the deck and nearly fell on me. That was scary, but worse than that, the deck is very cold and slippery. I walked about three steps and decided I really didn't neeed to go potty that bad. It might be better later. I turned around and hopped right back into the nice warm house. Mom laughed all the way. Then Daddy put my leash on and took me out front where the slush wasn't so deep and scary. And then Daddy shovelled the deck. I'm so lucky.

I've been watching the labrador retreivers next door rolling in the white stuff but I can't figure out why. I always thought Moose was a little off but he's fun to play catch with so he's still my favorite buddy. I think I'll just keep watching that way I stay warm and safe. Hope you all do too.

    Sweet Shelby

  • Happy V-Day Basenji Boy! Hope you're staying safe in the mess! :)

Sweet Shelby (from Stormie) - those labs just aren't quite right, are they? ;) Willingly laying down in that cold, wet stuff and gasp enjoying it! Stay warm and Happy Valentine's Day! :)

  • @red:

Happy V-Day Basenji Boy! Hope you're staying safe in the mess! :)

Some of us went to work.  Thanks R&WF, made it safe and sound.:D

  • Hi all you Northeasterners :) I too am HATING this weather…lots of snow, ice pellets, ice, slippery sidewalks & the darn rock salt!! UUGHHH

If my pooches were as eloquent as Stormie & Sweet Shelby...they would be wondering who the heck sold their mom these AWFUL booties that they put on this morning for our potty walk

Eventually they realized that the booties were not so bad. My ever adaptable C3 was quite thankful his paw pads didn't crack & burn this morning with all that rock salt laid out on our streets. Topaz was not having it...kept trying to chew off her booties every chance she got. Then she figured out that she didn't have to keep holding up her paws!

They DID manage to do their potty business though despite the wet white stuff :D :D :D unlike Sweet Shelby :) they were considerate enough so that I could get into work at a decent hour :) If mom keeps her job they get cool stuff like BOOTIES :D :D

Ladybasenji, where are you in Quebec? Montreal? We have a place in Gatineau (Aylmer sector) and one of my dogs might even be related to yours. You're experiences with your girl remind me so much of my first basenji, about 20 years ago–it gets easier, I swear! Let me know if you'd like help with Lady--they're nothing like labs and will never be "obedient" but there are tricks for training them : D

My Basenjis catch and kill wasps and have never got stung in doing so - their snap and release is too quick for them to get stung. However one did get stung on his foot when he trod on a dying bee. Often Basenjis get frightened of a particular thing when they sense their owner's fear. Are you afraid of wasps, Shelley?

Jayden is super gross when it comes to what he'll eat: poop, vomit, and, if he pees on the patio, he'll lick that. Honest!!! We feed him and we feed him very well! Yucccchhhhh! Pat

@spitfirekrl1: He doesn't seem to mind much he pretty much ignores it except when she pins him and he ends up on his back. Then he'll start snapping at her face which doesn't seem to steer her away from her objective (we have no idea what that is at this point). When she pins him she wants submission. She wants him to not struggle and nip and he should calm before she lets him go. Momma dogs do this to their puppies, it is part of puppy education. They do it most to the puppies that are the most pushy usually. In our last litter, Zeke always expected to get his way and he was the one who was pinned by both mom and Rio the most. He learned that by submitting he was allowed to go back to play. When he crossed the line, by playing too rough or invading the adults personal space he was pinned. He learned the limits to play and how to behave appropriately with adults from this. The other pups would get the same treatment but less because they didn't push those boundaries as much.
