Kennel Aire Crate

Basenji Talk
  • I'm looking into buying a Kennel Aire Commander series crate for in the car.
what do you guys think would be the best size crate for travel for a basenji? I have really big crates at home, but I don't think the travel wire crate should be that big.

  • I think the car size is a 144 or 145 - which equates to about a 200 wire crate in other brands.

BTW, good luck finding one :D:D - they don't make the Commander anymore and IF they show up on ebay, they usually go $150+ and don't have bottom pan.

  • Ebay was my plan I was expecting to pay about $150, but I guess I need to modify that idea?

It depends. I've never had to crate another breed forever, but my one basenji would get destructive if left alone.. the 2nd one would pee on my bed. So crating it was. However, I'm home so they were rarely crated. My current basenji is fine loose as long as she's alone. So like they said, do it slow, confine to an area that is safe and see how it works out. But if you need to keep crating, most dogs sleep far more than people.. up to 17 hrs a day. Just exercise before and lots after so they aren't bored.

I would recommend when you have the time, take some steel wool and strip off all the rust and then spray paint it to prevent more rust from forming.

Thanks, that is a good idea. She has a comfy bed and lots of blankets. Althogh as I have said before when she gets out of the crate everything has to come out with her. I will try setting everything up in the big crate and leave the door open. Thanks!!

Wow…. fantastic thread, glad I read through this. I recently thought about finding a good place as an option for the event I need to go out of town and can't find an in-home pet sitter. The caretakers in my building have been fantastic sitters, since they live in the building and just take the elevator down a few floors to check up on him. Unfortunately they are leaving and most likely are retiring. So I need to find another option. There's a kennel nearby, aprox 1-2 miles from here (talk about convenient), that has been around since the 1940's if i'm not mistaken. Great people, have used them before with other dogs (years ago), but called them up today to get some current info. They have had basenjis before (which is good to know) and every single one has always been boarded by themselves, and never with another dog. They seem to understand the needs. $25+tax/night for him to be boarded on his own overnight. Doesn't seem too bad, but now I have a backup option. Nice thing is they also offer a free trial board in the middle of the week to see how they react. They screen for vaccinations, etc.
