Anyone has Akita and Basenji?

Basenji Talk
  • Hi all,

Just curious: does anyone have or have ever had a basenji and an akita at the same time. I have both (and boxer, too) and they are just awesome together. I have not heard or read about anyone with basenji and akita at the same time. We got akita first and she was about 5 months old when we got our basenji. The basenji was already almost two, so she raised the akita puppy. She is still the mama of the three, although she is the smallest one. She takes care of the akita who is at least 6 times the size of her! They play together and basenji takes akita down!

  • Yes we have an akita whos is 6 years old and our B (Jaycee) whos is almost 9 months old. How big is your akita ours is 135 to 140 lbs. This is our 3rd one over the years and Sterling is a long hair,

Your two look very nice together. Sterling and Jaycee play together but Sterling has the basement while Jaycee has main floor he has to much hair. Sterling come upstairs just does not get to stay. He's happy whole basement with our daughter and her cat DB.

  • My akita (Mishka) is about 95 pounds, although her dad is about 130lbs. All of our dogs are primarily outside dogs, although basenji spends much more time inside than the other two. And when it's windy/rainy/cold in the winter, all of them sleep inside, although the akita does not like it inside much.

  • Cute pic of the both of them! :) We haven't got an Akita, but our neighbours do. Tillo and her get along very well.

  • I still over see and watch when Jaycee and Sterling are together but I will say may god help the one that would touch Jaycee. Akita's are very much family dogs and love there family all two and four legged ones.

  • What a lovely photo. They look great together.

  • Thanks guys! I got photos of them playing together, too (and Lana wins too!)

  • Great pictures and such a love together.

  • As you can tell, Lana (the B) is the alpha dog!

  • So neat were Lana has her back foot standing on the front foot of the akita. I am holding you down and then the hug with my paws was next. I really like that picture.

Thanks! You should see Lana walking all over Mishka (the Akita) when she got her pinned down!

  • I just love that you have those two because I love my akita as well as my B. I have had akitas for a long time and they to are special in there way.

I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.
