Podengo grande

  • You can follow what we are up to at:www.podengo-mediogrande.com

We have many friends in European Countries who are more familiar with the breed.

  • So they are close to size as Pharoah hounds?

  • medio size is 17-22" and Grande 22-28 so bigger by a bit - Hanna is barely 24 and Buster is almost 26.

I noticed a number of "meet the breed" activities, etc. in the MN area. I'm guessing that will be you and your dogs? I'm thinking about showing Zoni in MN if it works out so it would be cool to see some in person.

I realize this is just the beginning of a lot of hard work, but out of curiosity, how do you sustain or grow the breed in the US and Canada with such a limited number of dogs? I'm guessing you'll have to rely heavily on the Portugese breeders for diversity? Good luck with Hanna!

  • Well - after doing some research - I discovered a couple of things.

One - not many of the big size exist in family homes as pets - mostly in packs and not registered. When they want one to show - they go to the pack and find one (on the off season for hunting). They have him examined by a judge and he/she has to get good evaluations at shows and they give the dog and RI number (this is Registration Incomplete). Then they evaluate the get and if they are also good the dog gets a regular registration number. They may not have a sire or dam as known or only have a dam and no known sire. So right out of the shoot - I have to have a way to have those dogs recognized here or puppies out of those dogs registered here.

Two- When I started I assumed that you get Medio and Grande born as distinct breeds - not the case you can get both sizes in the same litter. AND 2 of one can produce the other. In Portugal you can change breed names if you grow too big or were thought to be big and were not. In the US AKC you are what your parents are.

Since the breed was incorrectly entered into the AKC Foundation Stock Service program by the first club, we formed 2 different clubs to divide the breed because just imagine an 8" dog in the ring at the same time as a 28" dog AS THE SAME BREED- The previous club had them all together.

I think that this month the AKC Board will divide the breed into Pequeno and MedioGrande.

Since Medio and Grande are not seperate breeds we can breed them together. We believe that with some careful breeding - we can expand both gene pools BUT fully expect to have to add new dogs from Portugal (shipping kills us) as well.

We do email around to see if anyone is going to this or that show so you probably want to get on that email list.

I may not be out as much with Hanna because she will be due early June - I frequently go to Lake Minnetonka KC with her. But might come with one of the wires that live a bit north of me. Otherwise I'm about 30 min west of MNPLS - glad to have a visit.

    Love to see you.

  • Wow, that seems like that is going to take some time. So technically, the medio and grande would then be varieties of the same breed ? It's really fascinating though. I'm curious to see how Hanna's litter turns out.

It would be cool to meet you and see some of the podengos. I was just checking on the AKC site and I guess basenjis aren't shown a lot in Minnesota at the moment based on last year's participation. Oh well.

  • Well AKC has not allowed varieties since 1950's so we will deal with size dif by having open classes divided by coat and size. We did this last year at our specialty and it worked well.

Were you at EauClaire Wisconsin this weekend?

No. Last thing I went to was the BCOSW fun match the weekend before.

  • There is I guess someone else in the WI area with 3 from Jean behl that wanted to know what was happening show wise. I would suggest you either get to my personal website - click on my user name and there should be a link - email me that way and I can see that your email gets added to the show attendence discussion.

I'm in, too. Some are wire haired and others are smooth like a Basenji? Interesting breed.

@dmcarty: I typically only breed when I have some good home lined up as well. But when I started to investigate the breed - there were 19 Podengo Grande Smooth registered in the world. So I started the project to see what we in the US could do to increase the numbers and to motivate those breeders in Portugal to register their dogs. We are starting to see some success and never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have 11 puppies. I do have some homes and some will go to different parts of the US for breeders of other size Podengo to show off, I have a few that are staying by me and a friend has offered to take in a couple to continue socializing when I have to go back to school in the fall. Once they get their shots and I can get them out and about - I think I will see some interest. My good friend Wendy (Harehill Hounds) has been very helpful in building some interest in the Beezer community as well. It really sounds that you know what you are doing, so everything will turn out fine , I am sure about that! meanwhile you can show us loads of pictures of the bunch :D

@dmcarty: There is info posted at these websites if you are interested in seeing more - www.podengo-pequeno.com and www.podengo-mediogrande.com Those sites were really interesting thanks for posting them. I've been following this since you first had us guess what breed you were importing. Nice to follow the progress! :)
