Is raw mince ok to feed them?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • @gbroxon:

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that bacterial poisoning can't happen, just that there is not a big risk of it happening. In all my research about raw, I've come upon a few other "deaths by bacteria." Now I know about one more. I'm sorry you lost your dog this way, nobarkus.

No no that's Ok, I almost lost her. She lived on for 17-1/2 great years. We're all here to help each other by exchanging information and experiences.

My bad. My eyes skipped over the "almost" part the first time I read it. How wonderful that she was with you for so long! That's amazing under any circumstances.

Thanks, her picture's in my gallery.

Hi Michelle, Did you get in touch with Kelli to let her know about Lenny? Sorry to hear you're having issues. Rocky is doing great now, no more cancer. Lenny as you know is Rocky's older brother. Kathryn

There are two sides of the coin here. While we may trust that the vet has the knowledge, we also know our dogs. It is ultimately up to the owner to decide the right course of action. Not everyone gets it right the first time either. Neither the vet nor the owner. I have had a vew encounters with vets who think they know my dog better than me-even with test results staring them in the face. On more that a couple of occassions, I have had to step in and say, "No, this is the route I want to take." But with that decision comes education as well. I think that the consumer, as they grow with knowledge, becomes more adept at reading things on their own and the vets should start to listen and have more open minds to the owner. Just MO. Glad to see, though, that things are on the move for your baby!

My Diego does the same thing, breath hard and irregular, twitch his eyes, shake a little, etc. I never really worried about it because we figured it was dreams, and when we woke him up he would be fine..

mmm Sounds Tasty. I cooked Cairo's food for the first few years, then moved him to a raw meat diet for a few years. We had a Dalmation who liked raw food, and though she mothered Cairo he would eat this food unusually fast to stop her from getting it first. But when she died, he went off the raw meat so I resummed cooking it up. These days I find he prefers cooked food and eats more of it than with the raw stuff. But it never seemed to do him any harm so good luck with finding a diet that your B likes.
