Itching and rash around the neck

    Haven't had to use them for Arleigh but had to a few times for Bisquit. they're for 'hot spots'…."DermaCare" and "Relief". Both from the vet (Dr. Tracey Leonard) and worked great. Sometimes we can't figure out what causes those "hot spots" they just are....as a human I have also experienced this. Hives on my legs and arms, went to the urgent care, they gave me a shot and a prescription strength Benadryl 'script. Never did figure out why.....hadn't happened before and never since, go figure?

    Chance had a bad experience with benadryl, the one time we gave it to him several years ago. A very small dose made it hard for him to breathe. So we have not given it to him since then.

    We will try the relief cream, but he tends to roll on the floor anytime something smelly is put on him, plus Kiya likes to lick it off immediately as well off of him. As you can tell we are having a tough time with this.

    I would still consider the collar issue as contributing factor - if the collar is not the real cause it could be aggrevating the real cause. Could also be dry skin - there are some natural skin lotions for dog (can't remember the name of the one I used last year).

    If he still wears the same collar and it is the culprit, it will irritate already raw skin and prevent complete healing. I know the holidays are usually tight for everyone, but perhaps finding a (maybe no-so-stylish) collar made of a completely different material and without dyes would stop the cycle. That's what eventually worked for Elvira, my cat. If it is confined to one spot where there an item directly touches the skin on a regular basis, it sounds more like contact dermatitis to me. Any creams may exacerbate the situation. If it was a food allergy, I would expect a more widespread problem.

    I would suggest, if he wears a cloth or nylon collar, get a natural leather collar with stainless steel loops rather than coated brass. Since colorful nylon and cloth seem to be the rage right now, it may be a little more difficult to find. The payoff is the leather collar will last much longer than cloth or nylon.

    If it is felt a cream or ointment must be used, break open a Vitamin E capsule and rub the goo on his rash. It is odorless and if Kiya feels she must be Little Miss Nursemaid, the Vitamin E will benefit her as well.

    It's most likely a yeast infection. They get it in the ears quite often. Buddy has a yeast infection right now on his stomach.

    @MacPack: I would bathe her with a soothing non-irritating soap for starters. She may have contacted plants that are causing the itching and washing may help. HOpefully you can get some benadryl in the morning if she is still itching. When any of ours get a flea, they act like that so if you have a flea comb, I would try that as well. Good luck! yes flea combs do help with the itching. I have found the ones from JW to be pretty good

    @hotrodruby: frankee my 3 year old has also recently developed a red rash and blistering on the left side of his groin area and was licking it constantly, not sure what it could be, we put a cone on to prevent him from licking it. will be taking him to the vet tomorrow. not sure if it is a yeast infection or rashe from something else. I would bet a yeast infection

    @tanza: Could also be a reaction to some kind of bite… here is another thought... when did he have he last round of shots? But in the end, I think I would take a trip to the Vet... could just be a little ear infection going on... they can and do get yeast infections in the ears.. and I have found that puppies for what ever reason get dirty ears... and slight infections. Kobey had one when he was about 4/5 months old... His second round of puppy shots he got on the 7th of this month. His next round isn't until the 6th of March. I am going to call the vet this afternoon & ask them if we should bring him in. His ears do get really dirty with wax buildup. I have actually used a q-tip (he's gotten a little better) & cleaned them almost every other day in the past week because everytime I look down there I see some buildup. Maybe that itself is another sign that something more is wrong. I will check his paws & rear tonight for any signs of an allergy but I examined him a lot last night (after noticing his ears) & didn't see anything else out of the ordinary.

    Phoenix has had a rash like that before i went to the vet I figured a yeast infection is a yeast infection right weather in people or pets so i went and bought some "womans yeast infection meds" those bullet shaped things and just took it out of the wrapper and just rubbed it on his tummy alittle i rubbed it in and made sure he didnt lick at it the next morning the rash was just about gone went to the vet and she said that's what he had and to acaully just use what i did for a day or so and it should be gone it was a surface yeast infection and so as long as i just rubbed that stuff on like it was lotion he would be fine i applaied it 2 more times and it was gone he gets them from time to time and thats all i do it's a alot cheaper in the long run the stuff she said she was going to give me was going to cost me $67. plus the cost of the vet so i figured now i will just save the moeny and go spend 8 :) i would think there might be a problem using that if u have a dog that likes to try and lick it but phoenix could care less he just enjoyed his belly rub while i was rubbing it in :)

    Cali had the same thing…so I took her to the Vet on Sat.......they said it was common for puppies. so they gave me Clavamox for the lumps...twice a day also Hydroxyzine for the itching 1 tablet 8-12 hours as needed... and this shampoo Chlorhexiderm Shampoo....2-3 days aweek thats all the info I have..and will let you all know on how things go with that......cause i was going to try Benadryl.
