Newbie to basenjis

  • we are long time dog nuts , despite 5 grown [almost ] kids.. A friend enticed my wife to look into basenjis and after much resaearch arranged to meet the breeder from Oklahoma, in Dallas to pick up MOSES.

MO IS NOW 7 MONTHS OLD .HE CO-HABITS WITH A 7 YR OLD FEMALE MINI DACHSHUND ,A MALE SAVANNAH CAT, who is his best buddy, and a female PERSIAN CAT who has taught him a bit of humility.

We also have a pair of dobermans who live in their own special area..the female DYNAMITE ADORES MOSES..
THE MALE STONEY FINE WITH OUR OTHER DOGS , IS NOT TOO HAPPY WITH THE PUP AND HAS NOT BEEN LEFT OFF LEASH OR ALONE WITH MOSES..:)

mOSES AND THE CATS AND SAMANTHA THE DOXIE ALL SLEEP WITH US AFTER 2 MONTHS OF MOSES IN OUR ROOM IN HIS CRATE.

WE ARE LEARNING DAILY RE THE BREED BEHAVIOR ISSUES AND LOVE HIM..
EARLY PUPPY CLASS WENT WELL BUT HE BECAME BORED AFTER 5 SESSIONS.

WE ARE DEBATING ABOUT WHEN AND WHETHER TO FIX MOSES..ALL OUR OTHER PETS ARE NEUTERED….GENE

  • Welcome Mo and your extended 2 and 4 legged family. You'll find LOTS of loving and educated advice here.

After 5 kids, a basenji should (almost) be easy. Just think of all your children at 2-4 years old at the same time. Bless you!!

  • Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you're going to be right at home here as we like to share stories of basenji quirkiness almost daily. Regarding neutering Moses or not, most breeders on here recommend doing it anywhere between 7-10 months unless there is a behavior related reason to do it sooner. Our puppy boy is 6 months and we're waiting probably 2-3 more months to get him neutered. And as far as your decision whether to neuter or not…if he's going to be a companion pet there's no reason not to, even if you don't have any intact females in the house.

If in researching the breed you haven't run across info on Fanconi be sure to check out http://basenjihealth.org/index.html
    or http://basenji.org/?q=node/17

If you don't know your boy's fanconi status be sure to get him tested.

Once again, welcome to the forum!! Enjoy!

  • Unless there is a good reason to keep him in-tact… you are much better off just having him neutered...

And as noted, has he been Fanconi tested? His sire and dam? Please read about Fancone at www.basenjihealth.org and also other Basenji health concerns.

You have an interesting mix there, if he is a Basenji/Pit Bull mix. One has the wilfull nature, and the tenacity of the other. I would feed him, if he asked me. He may be listed as a "dangerous dog" so get him used to a muzzle when out walking. Preventing any incident is better than dealing with any consequences.

If you click on the last icon with the arrow up icon, you can upload photos. They need to be in JPG format I think.

As mine age I try to keep a bit of weight on them because I know they may reach a stage when they just don't keep weight as the organs weaken.
