Separation Anxiety

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Thank you for your help and your kindness. I'm discussing it with my vet/behaviorist and doing lots of research. My girl has had so much loss, plus she's timid to boot. She's afraid of things: noise, people, her reflection, dogs, me leaving. Behavior mod has already helped many things: her tail is now up, she now plays tricks and chase with me, she steals, she gardens, has a new dog friend & loves grooming. When I'm here, she's not so glued to me anymore, hangs around the yard & other rooms. Some things got better, sep anxiety got worse, but I feel positive about the work ahead of us. Thanks again. I'll keep you posted.

@Saving Thanks so much for the information! I am researching further and continuing with her rehab exercises as best I can. Glad you recovered from your spinal injuries.

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

@serenjane My Kembe had the freckles on her neck - more pronounced in summer months w/ the sun and also as she aged. I use to call her my little 🦒 giraffe. 😂

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

It does sound like this person's dog is actually eating the bedding, towels, etc. because he/she is worried about the dog getting a blockage. Something that is safe to eat would be better than paper, I think, but I've given Paco Busy Bones and Kongs with treats inside, just to find when I get home that he's totally ignored them. I'll get home, open the crate, and he'll pick up the Bone or Kong and start working on it outside of the crate. I think it's his protest to being left home alone and not getting to come along more than a protest to the crate, as he never minds going in there. To the OP, I wouldn't worry too much about your dog not having bedding - Paco shoves his bedding to one side of the crate and sleeps on the plastic bottom all the time. I don't think they mind too much, as long as they're not in there for long. Have you tried video-ing your dog after you leave, or sneaking back to the house and spying on him? I video'd Paco once and found that he pawed at the corners and sides of the crate for six minutes, then curled up and slept until I came home 4 hours later.
