    My B, Sahara growled at a friend of mine yesterday when he was leaving. She was trying to get him to stay. She does this alot to me and my husband, but yesterday was different. Her growl was more mean than ever, and I think he thought she was going to bite him. Sahara had never seen him before, and he was talking to her and petting her and when he turned to leave that's when Sahara tried to grab his wrist with her mouth and growled real loud. He hollered at her and I tried to grab her collar and she would not let me get close to her. He did finally get hold of her collar and I took her from him until he got across the invisible fence. Last night when I left to go to my sister's house she tried to grab my wrist while I was getting in the car and I showed her my water bottle and said, "No Sahara, No bite!", she did not growl and backed off. At this point I do not know what to do with her, I can't have this! Any suggestions? This is the worst she has ever acted!

    Wow - sounds like Duke's behavior to me. He doesn't like it when people leave the house or yard. I don't know why he does this either. I spoke with a behaviorist. She said it's because we have allowed this behavior and is a hard habit to break - (hard to do). When people leave my home, I scoot the dogs outside. If I can't do that, I put Duke on a leash and tell him to sit and (try) to ignore his verbal and physical protests. It hasn't worked for me - yet. I find it much easier to get him out the back door. I have blocked his access to the front yard. We also have underground fence. My son's friends know not to leave the yard until Duke is in the house. I don't know what else to advise.

    Not sure if this will help you, but we are in the process of training Charlie to move away from the door (go to his bed) and wait there while we leave the house. We started yesterday, and so far so good. He understands "bed" (go to your bed) and "wait" (stay put for a moment). Perhaps you could ask Sahara to stay away from the door while people are leaving… with praise and treats for good behavior, of course... While DH leaves home for work, I get Charlie to come by me and stay - then I treat and release him so he can watch DH through the patio door :)

    My vizsla used to grab people by the seat of their pants as they left the house and even I had a bruise or two. All the dogs now have a "place" they have to go to when I or anyone else leaves. I started by teaching them their places first with lots of treats and praise. Now, I announce when I or anyone is leaving and they all run to their places and wait for a little treat. As I leave the house I drop a small treat to each of them on my way out.

    Exactly, amazing how people think that is funny up to the point someone gets bit and then they say "oh I just don't understand how that happened"….sigh

    GRRRRRR that woman P"ed me off something fierce She thinks it's a joke and putting it on youtube like it's funny instead of trying to deter that behavior Phoenix is having some issues like that but u would NEVER see me get a camera and tape it instead of correcting him. I swear some people need a HUGE B**** slap . those people who tape there dogs while there being aggressive and think it's a joke haha look at my dog when hes going to bite someone haha grrrrr i think i need anger management classes cuz i really want to hunt this woman down.

    Also young+tired ,, The thing i have done is put him on a leash when that before behavior happens so i can get to him quickly or pull him back. when people come over or leave that way i can handle the postion before it starts .

    :rolleyes: This woman is so stupid to let this B's behavior go to the point of looking like it will bite. My Sahara, does growl at times, but I would not allow this behavior at all. I have grabbed her when she tried to keep me from shuting the bathroom door on her, she was growling real loud, she knew I meant business and has not tried that behavior lately. I did carry a water bottle with me when I got into my car recently and told her, "No", and she has not done the growl & grab Mom's wrist since. Yea, the next time company stops by I will put her on a leash when they leave, which is a problem sometimes as she runs from me. Have to get the special sandwich meat treat out for that. haha!!!!! Can't keep her from the mailman and UPS man, I don't know when they come until it's too late. She is doing better about minding my "Leave It" commands, so I think in time of reinforcing no growling she will get better. Thanks all for the advice!:D

    Unfortunately we have the same problem with our boy (9) and girl (10). Off leash they play well - 95% of the time. The other 5% can be a disaster especially with small frightened dogs. My guys have gone after such animals and even bitten them - once drawing a small amount of blood. This behaviour seems quite instinctive and regrettably I have not been able to curb it. I do hope your pleasant little fellow doesn’t go this far. But we are talking about a very primitive breed.

    This is a very common basenji issue! They get comfortable and don't want to be bothered. My brindle dog only does it when he's still delirious from sleep and "snaps out of it" when he realizes what's going on. Teaching a dog "OFF!" is very important! Do it when they are happy and awake and then move to sleepy and grumpy. On the couch, say OFF! and treat them when they get it right. It becomes a game. Both of my dogs know what "OFF!" means and listen to it. One of them will continue to grumble until he's fully awake and then he's back to his happy self. I agree with Pat and the treats for crate time. When I leave for work I say "Who wants a treat?" and off they run to their kennels! I break out the good stuff for going to work time. At night I say night-night and in they go. This didn't happen overnight! It took my red boy months to like his crate. Lots of sleepless nights with a screaming puppy. I actually had to buy him a new one because I discovered he was scared of the all enclosed plastic crates. Now his perfect in his crate and goes in on his own to relax.

    Aside from personal aesthetic preference, I think this is also why I tend to like dogs with pricked ears. I like being able to read the range of expressions through their ears. It's especially cute when they fold their ears flat in their extremely-happy-greeting-face, like when I just get back home and open the door.

    The treat issues haven't been too horrible. Most of the time the people who bring them quickly learn the downside of it and don't do it again. :) She's been doing a lot better, and I've been determining when it's okay to discipline and when not. If she's doing a "give me space" where three or four dogs are sniffing her at once, I hold back, but occasionally she's gone after just one dog and I put her down for that. Next thing you know she's just playing with the dog, chasing or whatever. So it seems to be working. She's gotten a lot better at coming on command as well, even from across the park. It's tough to break that ADD that most 'Senji's have :), but of late she's gotten really good at breaking away from what she's doing if I call her. Who knows…we may make a dog out of this "cat-dog" yet! :)

    oh yes and last night I was actually furless on the bed. Of course had to push Belle off the bed about 10times but at least she got the message before 12.00am and went to her bed. But at 6 they came up…Hey baby steps...

    @Vanessa626: Here is an update on the little growler. Since the post I have tried a few different things and the best thing that seems to work is getting down and dirty :) (figure of speech) I have been mixing the food with my hands and hand feeding him. It has been working and after doing that for a few minutes I give him the bowl and sit next to him telling him that he is a good boy. So far so good. He is definitely trying to show that he is becoming a teenager but what he doesn't realize..I am more stubborn than him and wont give in :) He is now sleeping on the floor. No more sleeping with us. I now make sure I am first to walk out any door and he must follow. These little things are helping. Thanks everyone for offering suggestions!!! That is great…. and glad that Chance is getting the message... It has always amazed me how quickly they get these ideas into their heads...
