    Yesterday we got our The Basenji magazine. I had paged through it but hadn't really taken a close look at it but had it sitting on my desk when my husband got home. He picked it up and thumbed through it stopping at the stats page that lists all the standings for various organizations. He then says to me, "Hey Cole is tied for 16 in AKC lure coursing, hey, Rio is in 10th, how is she is beating her brother?", "I didn't think we did all that much racing this year, how did Rio get to be 12 in NOTRA?", "Hey, Cole is in the top 20 in LGRA and ASFA."

    Today I sit down and open my email and have a message from my mom, Cole's owner. She just got her The Basenji magazine today and writes, saw the Kinetic kids in the Top 20, 2 in AKC, 1 ASFA, 1 LGRA, 1 NOTRA. Apparently she and Sam have the same reading habits.

    Funny thing is, I usually look at those stats pages last so who knows when I would have actually noticed. They are not the year end stats but still pretty cool to see.

The first instance was a friend of mine whose Border Collie was disinterested in food rewards, and she was advised by the instructor not to feed the dog anything on class days so there would be an incentive to accept treats. The second instance was my niece, and in this case a German Shepherd dog that again didn't want to take treats, and she was given the same advice by a different trainer, in fact in a different city, so it appears that it isn't unusual. Both these dogs work well for praise and in both cases the owners declined to starve the dogs....

    Let's also consider that when you chase your dog, the dog thinks it's a game and will run away from you. Like... "you can't catch me!" Man, Basenji's can bolt! On the other hand, when you are the one running away, the dog instinctively joins you because you are part of the dog's family/pack. This is not to be confused with a learned command to chase an assailant, in Police work, for example. That would be a totally different game of chase.

    Chase is great... if he's chasing you. But if you're chasing him, this is very bad. Playing chase, with him chasing you, will also help with engagement. Play chase with food. Also, I would recommend hand-feeding for (at least) a month. You want to build value in you. In addition, it has to be said, that some puppies are just lazy and like being bummy. You can encourage active behavior by making yourself valuable (so he wants to be around you) and by making activities valuable. At 6 months however, you might be out of luck. Still, it's your dog, so it's probably worth it to give it a dedicated try. You also, might want to try using more valuable food rewards (like steak, cheese, etc. (whatever he loves and doesn't typically get much of)). Best of luck.

    @klangill I asked in the Facebook San Diego (CA) Basenji Meetup group about trainers. A member recommended Crewsn K9 Academy. https://www.crewsnk9academy.com/ I posted early in this thread about checking with the local breed club, South Coast Basenji Fanciers, for advice.

    I have a lunge whip, which we've played with ever since I got her. She loves it. I tried her at it on a small course back in July at our club picnic (here's the video, I've posted it before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gl6NAGvjow) and she took off like a crazy girl. That was her second time doing it that day. A few months before that she was a little unsure of what to do. So, it sounds like to practice her a number of times to get her highly focused on the lure. I'm guessing Sue might be going to Racine in August, but if you're there too Lisa, I'd appreciate any input on her "focus" if she gets to do some practice runs. Clay
