Officially crazy… advice about a 2nd B

    We took them with us to visit Nala(forum member) and they where perfect little boys.

    They were! I can only hope that my next Basenji is as well-behaved as Jasper and Willy and I plan on following all of the advice from our expert forum members!

    I think Booger will love a new friend…When I got Chike as a puppy the breeder felt very strongly about having two b's. She believed in opposite sex and an age difference. I deferred to her judjement and she found an older rescued bitch that was supposed to be very friendly.

    They got along fine for a few days and then for some reason the older bitch went after chike, cut him up really bad and broke his lower jaw. She went back to the breeder and Chike spent several days in the hospital.

    While that is an awful start, once he was well my vet kept his eyes open for a possible addition and we eventually found Brandi. She was about 3 at the time, had been turned in to the pound after her owner died, and was amazingly sweet and kind to Chike who first thought she was a new chew toy. They have been best friends ever since and Chike simply will not abide doing anything or being anywhere without Brandi.

    The only time he has torn up things he was not supposed to was when i once took Brandi to the groomer without him. I came home to torn up pillows and such and as soon as we came home he looked at me and peed right in front of me....I learned not to seperate them again....

    And as for picking things up....Brandi barked and barked when we brought her home and within a few months she had totally stopped barking. Now she may bark at a squirrel, but she has become basically barkless.

    A puppy!!! How exciting!!! You mention you will be getting him in January... How old will he be at that time? I know you want to bring him home asap, but please be sure he gets enough time (minimum 10-12 weeks?) with his mom and littermates to learn manners (i.e., how to pull his bites and other dog-to-dog communications) before you bring him home. I can't wait to hear how it goes. My favorite thing to tell people about this breed is that when they love you, it is their idea - it is not because you are a source of food and/or a loving companion. What's better than a basenji? Two basenjis!

    She has done some testing. Do you know the parents of the dog you are thinking about getting?     A coupple of issues in this thread! (Way to multi-task here people!) Treats: the whole "upset tummy" is definately a too much of a good thing issue. Whatever you decide to treat with, make them very small and just watch how much you give. My dogs go nuts for bologna or plain ham. Cheese is the perenial favorite, but never underestimate the power of a "Good Boy!!" Coats & "Cold" Weather: My boys have it rough. Living in the Midwest, it is not uncomming to spend all witner in the single digits (not counting windchill which often kicks us into the negative teens, if not worse). Both boys have dog coats made by Lands End in the same style (and cold weather specifications) as their Squall jacket series. It consists of an easy belly band and front chest closure meathod. No worries about tails or legs. Easy on, easy off. And my boys live in them during the winter. Dogs, just like people, quickly acclimate to the weather. If we deicde it's "Cold" at 50 degrees, they start to feel that way. If we decide 50 is downright balmy, the dogs learn that too. Walking: Oh, the perenial issue of B's! I agree with many of the posters here: it's all in the tone and your attitude. If you decide to be upbeat and positive and decisive, the B will follow! (But probably will quit at mile 6 if he hasn't had his ice cream yet… grin)

    sharron- Diego gets full run of the house for the most part, but all doors shut so can't get into bedrooms/bathrooms. He doesnt do good when you put him in just one room, he tries to get out.. when we bring her home i'm gonna stay home with them for about 3 or 4 days, so i should get a good idea how they are together.. thanks for the help!

    @Vegas: I don't think electric collars are cruel. I've worn one. I've shocked the crap out of myself. I've even taken some jolts with a cattle prod. There is only the "shock", no after pain. That being said, I would never use an electric fence for a basenji. Their prey drive is much stronger than their fear of being shocked. Negative punishment does not work very often with basenjis. It's about brains, not brawn when it comes to training them. Vegas Well I disagree with your comment about not being cruel… to a point... but I agree that negative punishment is not the best way to train a Basenji.... In regards to a regular electric fence, not the IF type, they do come in useful especially for fence climbers... or diggers for that matter.... and I know in one case the neighbors young male dog kept "eating" through the wooden fence to get to the Basenjis on the other side, especially when the bitch was in season... and electric fence (hot wire)... was a god sent

    All three pups sleep in bed with us. We bought two double beds and stuck them togeather so we could all fit. It's still crowded. My next dog IS going to sleep in a crate!
