    Hello everyone!

    this is my first thread on this forum and like to say hello…I will be in august owner of a red&white basenji..at this stage the puppy is still one month so I have to wait at least 3to 4 weeks before picking it up...so meanwhile I've been doing my homework to understand more and more about this breed since I've been living with miniature pinchers forever and since last october lost for ageing my last female at age 16... so now its time to turn page for a new chapter called Basenjii...

    I live in South Italy close to the seaside and this where I'am writing from... in Italy basenji owners are not many...it seems to be a dog that is not very popular so to have a answer in the local forum for a question as "clicker training" has not produced much effect and seems that no one has used this method consistantly enough to have background results data for Basenji...maybe training with the clicker is so distant from uman relationship way to deal that is ignored or hard to apply from Basenji owners..(!?!)...even doing a research on this forum no topic came out for help.....

    The question is this...has and does anyone apply the "clicker training" since ever had their dog and with what results...what actually can you get the basenji do with this system? or do Basenji learn better as any dog dose with the "...shouting & ignoring & treat method"..?

    Please if anyone can spare some advice... even if I do know that every Basenji will be one of a kind ...sofeel free to come on board I will be gratefull to learn more on Clicker training appllied to Basenji...

    I've done a little clicker training with Keoki, my six month old Basenji. This has been my first attempt, as it never occured to me to try with my two year old.
    Keoki has been very responsive. I use the clicker to get his attention focused on me so that I can give some other command. He will come running across the yard to sit at my feet if he hears the clicker! Actually, a few times I've forgotten to bring the clicker with me and have tried to imitate the sound – and he still comes running!

    There are some on this forum who use clicker training more extensively, and I'm sure you will get great answers.
    I'm not quite sure what you mean by "shouting & ignoring & treat method". I don't think that sounds like something we'd use much here in the US; not people who are serious about training their dogs anyway.

    And congratulations on getting your new puppy {soon}. I hope you will come to love this breed as much as the rest of us!

    Positive reinforcement methods like clicker training work wonderfully with basenjis. All four of my basenjis are clicker trained. I guess you could even consider Sophie to have started before birth since I was clicker training her mom while she was pregnant with the litter. The purpose of the clicker is to mark the behavior that you want so you could also just use a word like "yes" or "Yay" or "good dog" followed by a treat.

    I use clicker training to train a variety of behaviors such as sit, down, attention, name response, stay, stand, go to mat, front, point, hand targeting, and the list goes on. I also use it in agility training.

    @agilebasenji: for this sort of thing (big value treats over long time period), the best thing i've found to use is frozen liverwurst. i buy it, slice it and put it in a small container (the leftover cream cheese containers work GREAT for this) then put the container in the freezer. the pup gets to lick the frozen stuff for her high value treat - LOTS of treat over a long time, but not lots of calories or lots of treats in the tummy. the dogs at my house swear liverwurst pupcicles are wonderful. sometimes they will try to nibble, but given it's frozen and in a small container, it's hard to get lots of treats. I will try this, but I myself love liverwurst. Hopefully I will not eat it all before getting to the park. At the park today, I was about 75% successful with the whistle/treat recall. Not bad for the first time out, I think. Especially because there were easily 20 dogs there, and Kipawa is Mr. Social and has to visit with all of them.

    @pacificNWbasenji: Thanks for all of the great suggestions. Quercus: I will try opportunistic clicking/rewarding when he is nesting, hopefully it will help reinforce the desired behavior rather than confuse him. Agilebasenji: Surprisingly enough my guys do not roll on damp towels, very unbasenji like of them. They do insist on grabbing towels, running off with them and promptly killing them by giving them a great shake before stealing the stoled goods from each other. They ignore them during our training sessions because I have taught them 'on your bed' where they will run and place themselves on the area I point at (dog bed, place on couch, towel or blanket laid out) Thanks for the advice. Clay: Matter of fact we just began targeting on Saturday as well, with the nose touch. Dude does have a great high five so I think that paw touch won't be difficult. Tonight I began directing him onto the towel and doing a low five and click/rewarding when he would give the five and his paw would land on the towel. Lvoss: That's what i'll try next as soon as I can get him to exhibit a bit of the behavior. Thanks! Cool. Let us know how it works out.

    @Forever: Zoe on the other hand has turned into a little witch. As was suggested I think she is protective of chief. She even turned on Lizzy when she came over the first few minutes than they were fine. But all her previous doggy friends get snarled at when chief gets near them. I hope she settles soon. She has one old dog who looks forward to seeing her on his walks flinching around her now. When Liyah was a baby - if Brando started to go off on her, Ruby would put herself in between Liyah & Brando. Ruby was very protective of Liyah when Liyah was a pup. Ruby doesn't interfere as much anymore - once in a while she gets involved - she pretty much just lets Brando handle it now.

    @tanza: I think you are waiting too long. You should have two complete sets of shots before class. Waiting till they are 15/16wks you are missing critical socialization skills. Waiting for "all the shots" is pretty much old school these days. My pups go out even before that to things like lure trials… you just need to be careful and not let them "get" into anything like "old poop" laying around. I'm planning on taking her around the time of the 2nd shots if I can. But the problem is that the next round of puppy classes doesn't start till the last week of March, which would be around 14 weeks anyway. Maybe they will let me join the last half of the previous class but I'd have to check into that.
