Basenji Breeder Directory

Breeder Talk
  • Hi all-

I'm trying to put together an up-to-date website (Petigree) that lists all dog breeders in the USA, and we would love to add as many Basenji breeders as we can!

I started this site a few months ago because of the frustrations my girlfriend and I had when trying to find a reputable breeder.

This site is by no means perfect, but we are doing our best to help both prospective dog owners and breeders alike. Detailed health information is going to be added to the breeder profiles in the upcoming weeks.

If you are a breeder, feel free to chat me privately, respond in the thread, or sign up yourself: dog breeders

    Thanks!

  • If you are looking to list responsible breeders, go to www.basenji.org, breeders that are members of the Basenji Club of America are list by state (optional to join that list, but only for BCOA members).

  • Confused. Really. We have breeders listed in AKC, and in breed clubs. OFA maintains health certifications. Why reinvent the wheel? It's unlikely breeders who haven't tested or didn't report bad results will just open up to you.

Then you have Sally's database...which is extensive. A look at her work on just Basenjis might give you an idea of the enormity of what you want to do. So I really must be missing what your reasons and goals are.

One breeder from San Diego (Rancho Penasquitos) retired from their day jobs and moved to Texas; Bob & Terry Reed of Illusion Basenjis. Another San Diego breeder (Spring Valley) passed away almost 2 years ago; Doug Joy of Basenjis of Dune. Not all reputable breeders are visible on the BCOA website. Some don't want their kennels named because they do not breed very often. You should contact the breeder liaison via email for more breeders in California and other nearby states. The local breed club for southern California is The South Coast Basenji Fanciers. They can help you find a local breeder. The quickest way to get in touch with them if through their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SoCalBasenjiFanciers Northern California also has a breed club that you can contact, BCONC. Their Facebook page is: https://www.facebook.com/norcalbasenjis

I assume you mean for next winter's litters ? Nothing available at all right now - all this winter's crop will have been promised long since and be leaving the nest soon if they aren't already resettled. However, if you email me (see signature block - email addresses are on the websites) I will send you a list of Breed Club secretaries.

@Kipawa: I think most people will agree that neutering a dog does not spoil their spirit or temperament. More often, spaying or neutering results in a more calm, balanced animal. I agree, but we have lots of people on the Forum from over the "pond" and they have most different ideas about spay/neuter, different culture, different ideas…. and that is their right.... sometimes we all will need to agree to disagree..

@agilebasenji: So Breeder A said Breeder B didn't test? Personally, I'd do some homework before I'd believe what Breeder A said about Breeder B. Maybe it's true, and if it is SHAME on Breeder B! But I've learned that just because 2 people breed basenjis, doesn't mean they like each other. (And just for the record, I have no idea who Breeder A and Breeder B are.) Exactly…. and it is easy enough to check on the OFA site or Sally's pedigree site (of course that is not updated until OFA site is updated). But never go on what "he said/she said"... at least I don't... but there has been much discussion on other lists about well know breeder not testing or doing a questionable breeding with tested dogs... all pretty easily documented on the OFA site. So in some cases could be "he said/she said" with no truth to the statements..... as said, best and the responsible thing to do is check out your facts.
