Flying with a Basenji

    I saw a post previously, so doing a little research here - what is it like to fly with a Basenji? I am a prospective parent that would be flying from San Francisco to Memphis, TN twice monthly - one layover (thinking 3.5 hr flight and 1hr flight). Does anyone fly regularly with their Basenji? Service animal, so I would assume he/she would be in the cabin with me.

    Airlines are cracking down on "service" animals. Because of the vast abuses by many, don't count on being able to say a service animal on more and more airlines without a boatload of documentation. I think eventually they will restrict to certified trained dogs only and exclude emotional support animals to incredible rigid qualifications. I doubt puppies will be allowed.

    However, for your question, every dog is different. I would imagine doing it so often with lots of socialization, most stable dogs will be fine. A basenji from a responsible breeder is critical for health and temperament. Be aware the adult size of a basenji may already limit airlines you can use.

    I can understand airlines cracking down on some ESA'S but for someone who has a "real Service Dog" there are laws to protect that right from the ADA.
    I have a Service Dog trained by me and I have documents from a doctor stating that I need her.
    I don't fly and don't intend to but if I did I would not allow anyone to stop me as I'm protected by ADA law.
    And, yes my Service Dog IS A BASENJI.

    I agree, and people with real needs are being the ones punished by the others. Friends with long time service dogs support the tightened regs, but some are bitter they have to jump through hoops because of it.

    You're also not new to basenjis. That helps.

    Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

    Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

    lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

    My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

    I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!
