Help-Grapes Fed to my Dog

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I am sure I come across with a "tone too"… so I apologize also... and people will feed themselved and their dogs what is most comfortable. I know that I would be much healthier if I ate as well as I fed my dogs....ggggg.... and as with many things we all can agree to disagree....

  • I agree with dash….We may push whats in the office because we know it is balanced otherwise vets wouldn't carry it. I don't know how much vets spend in school but techs spend at least a full yr on it. for a 2-4 yr program thats a decent amount of time. But I do agree there are many decent diets out there and it tends to be a personal choice. If you're looking for a diet that makes less poop eukanuba low residue works wonders.

  • so, I just read this and my guys were eating grapes yesterday, LOL….I have heard that grape stems are bad....my guys are okay with a little bit of fruit from time to time....they love watermellon

as far as the vets say science diet is good.....well, it may be the best stuff they sell in the petstore....

i can tell you first hand from watching beta die and doing research with her foods as she deteriorated, here are some things to think about....

corporations say a dog should eat the same food all of their life, every day....it sells

a basenji in the wild doesnt do that....they may eat all kinds of different things to stay alive...

the doctors told me that when beta was getting ill to remove grains that were not found in the wild such as corn (major filler in pet foods), wheat, and rice...

the next thing they told me is that when basenjis have sensitive stomachs (IPSID or IBS) it is the intestine becoming allergic to the food....my doctors have said that it is healthiest to change the diet every 4 months to prevent this reaction in an intestinally challenged breed....

beta could eat anything and have solid poop. then she became ill so fast that there was nothing we could do. she was fed eukanuba performance or premium for 3 years before i ran into her illness.....

this does not mean switch dog foods without doing a little mixing and weening them off....try to avoid the squirts per se....

i fully agree with this idea....that is how they would be in the wild....always changing what they eat....

the changes will help their bodies become stronger immune wise and less likely to have the time to create an allergy to the food.

I add boiled chicken, fresh garlic, eggs, pumpkin (great fiber to make poop solid) and some natural fruits like watermellon or anything that is pretty bland...

when beta was at her worst, i used cottage cheese as her main food....it was the only thing she could hold down...

i dont think you will have to worry unless you feed grapes all day every day...

    everything in moderation...

    Let them eat gwapes!! LOL

My favorite dog food: Natural Balance Duck and Potatoe and Innova Evo
I can only find it in a feed store
less poop, smaller scoops, richer food
no preservatives, no rice, no corn, no wheat, no soy....

Thanks for the advice. We are now lice free, thankfully. I did some research and it turns out that. Dog lice are a specific species, different from human lice and we cant get them, neither can my cats.(I have two cats) I guess the bird lice are different. I had already given them the frontlin( not actually frontline brand, its called Fipronex, so that they wouldnt catch it. So I was extra worried for no reason. I am not a big fan of chemicals either. Thats why I didnt have Ayo on the regular dosis of frontline but the thing is that we have such a big stray dog problem that , almost every patch of grass in town is flea and tick infested and we end up having to deal with it a lot, so most people use frontline or similar products regularly. I didnt really have that problem with my last dog ( my great dane CHelo). I used to find a couple of ticks on him like once a year and usually they would dissapear with one application instead of having to regularly do preventive treatment with it. I will read up on the natural remedies, maybe I can use them next time without having to use the chemicals. I also read that these lice are very very uncommon in countries like United States or European countries,.. again, its the conditions of all the stray dogs that we have here. Its a shame, and there are a lot of organizations that try to help, but in the end, you know, when you have a lot of people that need aid, its really hard to get aid for animals. Thanks for the help….

You might want to watch her carefully in regard to her food, treats, and whatever she eats when you're not looking. Then change one by one to see if the diarrhea is indeed because of the particular brand of food.

Thanks everyone! Now I'm wracking my brain trying to remember where exactly her vaccines were. She got two in one day, and I preoccupied with holding her and giving her cookies! I keep rubbing it, and if anything, it seems a bit smaller, but I will absolutely let everyone know what happens next. Cheers

Phoenix has had a rash like that before i went to the vet I figured a yeast infection is a yeast infection right weather in people or pets so i went and bought some "womans yeast infection meds" those bullet shaped things and just took it out of the wrapper and just rubbed it on his tummy alittle i rubbed it in and made sure he didnt lick at it the next morning the rash was just about gone went to the vet and she said that's what he had and to acaully just use what i did for a day or so and it should be gone it was a surface yeast infection and so as long as i just rubbed that stuff on like it was lotion he would be fine i applaied it 2 more times and it was gone he gets them from time to time and thats all i do it's a alot cheaper in the long run the stuff she said she was going to give me was going to cost me $67. plus the cost of the vet so i figured now i will just save the moeny and go spend 8 :) i would think there might be a problem using that if u have a dog that likes to try and lick it but phoenix could care less he just enjoyed his belly rub while i was rubbing it in :)

@JazzysMom: Oh sorry, should have been more clear. I just sent my dogs' blood to Bryan, HE sent it on for testing. I was just replying as to where/how to physically mail the blood, not so much as related to the testing itself. Me too, should have been more clear, I was really responding to etzbseder about the CPP site and submitting blood, didn't even look to see the message was from you…. ggg

On any older dog, cataracts are very common… It would be very hard for a Ophth. Vet to mix up PRA with cataracts. Did you take your Basenji to a board certified eye vet?
