Housebreaking my 8 week old

Basenji Training
  • whenever my basenji (Macie) has a nap i always immediately bring her outside to pee, and poop if she needs to. and besides naps i take her out about every hour to hour and a half. Im just worried that she'll never learn to go to the door to let us know that she needs to do her business but she'll just wait for me to bring her out or just pee/poop in the house.

Any tips/ advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

he checked out fine at the vet... said while unusual, it's not unheard of for shelter dogs to have pee anxiety/adjustment issues for the first month and since he is otherwise fine to just give it a few more weeks. he really peed in the park on a pile of leaves yesterday afternoon for the first time and was praised so loudly everyone else around me was laughing... but then peed on the rug in my apartment lobby again this morning. at least he's not too shy to pee in front of my anymore and thank goodness i live in a very pet friendly building! :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing: so we'll keep working on it! and anyone else ever adopts a basenji mix from the shelter and also has this issue you'll know you're not the only one!

@mattlick12 and others in the New York City area: consider joining the New York City Basenji Meetup. We hold monthly (good weather) gatherings at dog runs throughout Manhattan. We had some nice new additions last year and hope to have some in 2014 as well. See us online at: http://www.meetup.com/basenji-nyc/

Polar Fleece is a better choice, I agree… or sturdy beds/mats for the crate... you really need to see how she does with bedding, none of my Basenjis were bedding killers. And the crate should be in the room where you sleep, next to your bed.... then you are right there to deal with any issues.

I am working with him on this as a game for us to play. Nosework is a very new dog sport but it is alot of fun and the founders have worked really hard to make it a sport everyone can enjoy with their dog and to make it a very positive experience for the dogs. I have been working my adults at it also. They really enjoy the game. We are working towards pairing the food with a target scent. Our first scent will be birch but that is still several weeks away for L'Ox.

I use bells with my B. He learned to use them in like 2 days. Since then, I've only had "accidents" when I ignore him b/c I'm busy. Sometimes he rings them just to go out to play, but other times he rings them when he REALLY has to pee. The best thing is, they are portable so when I go visiting with him he always knows how to tell me he has to pee.

My new boy, Will, is also 3, and it's taken us (me and him) a little while to figure out the routine. I think he used to go out on a tie-out or something. Curie has always done her business on walks, but he thought this was a bit ridiculous. Walks were for squirrel chasing and hydrant checking! But a few months into it, he seems to have gone along with the plan. I guess my advice would be to figure out what works for you and them. There is no rule that says they have to pee in one spot in the yard or that they have to only pee on walks or that they have to wear coats or not wear coats or wear funny hats. :) What works for YOU? (The rain is a drag – I just end up standing out there in the rain with them saying mean things in a nice voice until they get it over with.)
