Housebreaking my 8 week old

Basenji Training
  • whenever my basenji (Macie) has a nap i always immediately bring her outside to pee, and poop if she needs to. and besides naps i take her out about every hour to hour and a half. Im just worried that she'll never learn to go to the door to let us know that she needs to do her business but she'll just wait for me to bring her out or just pee/poop in the house.

Any tips/ advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

he checked out fine at the vet... said while unusual, it's not unheard of for shelter dogs to have pee anxiety/adjustment issues for the first month and since he is otherwise fine to just give it a few more weeks. he really peed in the park on a pile of leaves yesterday afternoon for the first time and was praised so loudly everyone else around me was laughing... but then peed on the rug in my apartment lobby again this morning. at least he's not too shy to pee in front of my anymore and thank goodness i live in a very pet friendly building! :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing: so we'll keep working on it! and anyone else ever adopts a basenji mix from the shelter and also has this issue you'll know you're not the only one!

While it's sometimes easier to hope that the older dogs will teach the little one, that doesn't always happen. While I had it work with Apache, it didn't with Zuni. When I was house training Zuni I would leash her up and take her out into the yard and just wait until she went, then praise and treat. There were many times she wouldn't move, so we just stood there until she moved and went or went where she was. It can be a real pain, especially in the middle of the night…but that doesn't last forever. Any accidents in the house were just cleaned up and not acknowledged. When we lived in the city, the dogs did prefer to go while on walks, but would, if they REALLY needed to go, go out into the yard.

He has a wheat/ beef/salmon/duck allergy and his tummy gets upset & bubbly. He can only eat his food no treats. So goes where he is starving to not wanting to eat. He has had this most of his life. He has been doing well on the Blue Buffalo Lamb & rice, but manages to leave the life bits. I can feed him a handful of food and out come the life bits, that our other dog Hoover vacuums up.

Yes, L'Ox loves nosework. I love that it is so easy to work them and I get tired, satisfied dogs even after just a few searches. I am taking L'Ox's mom, Rio, to a nosework seminar on Sunday. It should be fun.
