Coat condition and thyroid

    Hello all,

    I thought I'd ask everyone here about supplements. About a month ago, our 8 y.o. girl dog Loki was diagnosed with low thyroid. Before she started the thyroid meds, our vet suggested we give her 3V-Caps, Pet Tabs and melatonin, all of which she took and which temporarily seemed to help her coat and shedding, but the underlying cause was low thyroid. Since being on the thryroid meds, Loki's coat is back to its wonderful lustrous black and white.

    Do you think we need to continue the other supplements, specifically the melatonin and 3V-Caps? I'd love to discontinue the 3V-caps, since they're the pills that cost the most. Not much, but hey, every little bit helps, right? It'll help pay for the teeth cleaning she's due for!

    Has anyone else kept their B on supplements while also using thyroid meds?

    Hmmmm…. I don't know...I think I would consult with the vet about that. There may be something similar (I don't know what 3V is) that is less expensive....

    I've actually not heard of a vet starting a dog on something while waiting for the thyroxin to kick in (did I understand that right?).

    I have found 3V caps on the internet for a pretty cheap price… I have used these, not for coat condition, but believe it or not... for lameness... I have a bitch with a torn ligiment in her foot... and these really do help along with other things....

    They are a Omega 3 cap…. but for whatever reason, they help with problems with bones/ligiments, etc... My Orthopod Vet (the one that operated on my Maggii as a puppy when she broke both bones in her front leg... and had to do a second surgery to re-open the growth plate... and she has never had another lame day since... she is 15 1/2 now... lol.... I love that man!) has used them for years... as a great supplement... While I have not used them for a while... I will try and find the details on them...

    If you go to Omaha Vaccine site… and then seach for 3V caps you can find these... I am fairly sure it is the same thing that is being talked about... they are prettty cheap on here.... and I know from experience, buying from the Vet the price is "really" pushed up.....

    I haven't studied coat colour inheritance in dogs, but from what I know of it in horses, you can tell quite a lot by looking at sire and dam and grandparents. Sometimes you can rule certain colours in or out, and determine probabilities of the colours you will get in a mating. Someone who knows more about dog colour genetics will be of more help. If an animal is homozygous for a trait, or heterozygous can sometimes be determined by knowing the colour of the parents…..

    mine wear coats a lot in the winter. My boyz wear coats inside as it is often chilly inside. Of course my boyz are almost 14 and 15; I don't worry as much about Z who will be 5 next month. The real problem here is the wind. It can be bitterly cold when that wind blows. So I make sure to get them a coat that blocks the wind. Regular fleece feels like nothing out here. I don't do boots, but sometimes I wonder if I should. the B's are pathetic rotating which foot is held up not touching the cold snowpacked ground. I also increase food on cold days. Having said all that, right now it is sunny and in the mid 60s and feels great! I even have a window open. Of course a few years ago when my parents visited, we had a blizzard for Thanksgiving.

    Ok, thanks! I will have to try that. This is our first winter together, so I wasn't sure if their coats changed during the season.

    Thanks once again Tanza ;). Again I will have to wait for this test to be done… Khani's, our dogs first birthday pressie was info on how to be a good doggie, and follow all the rules Mummy has laid down for them ;););)... I cant believe that they wont follow the manual...

    We've finally had some success with Butter's allergies – wiping his face, belly, legs, pads & between his toes after he goes for a walk in the field. It's been a long haul and he'd been reacting to fungi and plants in the aster family (ragweed, etc...). Because he'd eat grass, sniff it, and walk through it, he'd have terrible reactions and the "little" bumps under his coat started turning into bigger bumps. All set for now. If an elimination diet hasn't helped with the bumps, it could be an allergy to something in the environment -- try wiping Hotep down after she's been out and see if it helps.

    Puppies usually "blow" their baby coat after teething and the color fo the coat will change at time…. So yes their coats to change, but not a lot... just like some pedigrees have black masking aroung the face (muzzle and eyes) that will fade with age. Also on Basenjis, the white never changes size... so a big white spot will be much smaller when full grown. Looking at the picture of your Kona, I would say that the white between his eyes was almost the entire area between the eyes when born
