Love My Dog

Member Introductions
  • Hello Everyone, I just want to start off by saying, "I sure Love my Basenji", she is so sweet and affectionate. Her name is Sahara, from the Sahara Desert in Africa. I have had her for 4 months, she is red and white. She will be 6 months on the 31st. We live on the East Coast, where it is pretty warm right now, she loves the sun, and going out in our boat. We are trying to get her to love the water, although we have been told Basenjis do not care to be wet. We have alot of fun with Sahara and my husband loves her also.:) Does anyone have tips on keeping her off our tables and counters, and housebreaking, she is almost there but not quite, some accidents now and then. Thanks

  • Hi! Welcome to Basenji Forums!

Do you have any photos of Sahara? It would be great if you can post them in the Show Off Your Dog thread.

Let us know if you need help posting your photos.

@abonnard Pee pads got me through in the end, she would pee every 20 mins for the first months, then 40 mins, then she suddenly went to being able to hold it for many hours. One of the best purchases I got before she arrived was a small carpet washer, saved my sanity. The cleanup is so key otherwise they go back to the same spot.

Whatever she is, she's a little doll. It's nice to know that the displaced pups are finding such good homes.

We look at Jaycee like when our daughter started to crawl and got into everthing. I can only hope for Jaycee as our daughter is eighteen and still getting into things. Rita Jean

They are both fixed and I have had a behaviorist in who was helpful in many ways. Willie had developed dominance aggression and deffered (I think I spelled that wrong) aggression. His aggression only seemed to surface in response to the way Rosie picked on him - it all sort of snowballed and anytime we went away and left them with someone else (in the house) something big (and bad) would happen. Willie's aggression has really decreased. He's almost his old sweet self - we feel much better about his behavior. Rosie needs some more work as far as he's concerned, but she's a sweetie with us. We'll keep trying and we haven't given up hope yet!

Thanks to all for your hartwarming welcome…. Barklessdog, I get you on the corny feet hahahah I smelled it...hihii still it's hardly an odor... Yes we are happy to bring our dog with us. We are not heading for the south but rather to the northeast to a place called Bibione... We might consider going more south another year...and meet up with Edward.... We do have a yearly beachwalk with only basenji's this year we cannot do it because walking on the sand would yet not be wise due to his bonegrowth... Kind regards to all of you!
