    Hello Everyone, I just want to start off by saying, "I sure Love my Basenji", she is so sweet and affectionate. Her name is Sahara, from the Sahara Desert in Africa. I have had her for 4 months, she is red and white. She will be 6 months on the 31st. We live on the East Coast, where it is pretty warm right now, she loves the sun, and going out in our boat. We are trying to get her to love the water, although we have been told Basenjis do not care to be wet. We have alot of fun with Sahara and my husband loves her also.:) Does anyone have tips on keeping her off our tables and counters, and housebreaking, she is almost there but not quite, some accidents now and then. Thanks

    @MacPack: Dusty is darling1 How great that you ignored the trainer and figured out your little guy. They can be so smart that they "fake it" in many ways, making it hard to realize they are deaf, or don't see well. Kudos to you for being such a great mom! Thank you, I think he's a doll myself but I'm partial. You know with him not being able to hear he is very visual and he will watch TV with me. I find that so interesting. He likes animated movies like the ones from Pixar, I can not watch any program with dogs, cats, horses, cows, bears or basically any animal because he starts barking like he is going to be attacked at any given moment. But if we are outside, and we see dogs or other animals he doesn't do anything. Maybe he is just protecting his turf when he's inside. When I tell people that he is deaf, they always say 'oh poor thing' and I always tell them that he doesn't know anything different so he's fine. If he had been able to hear and the lost his hearing that would be much harder for him. But he's really smart and picked up on my sign language very quickly, so he's happy. I'm happy too. Although when he's being a bit unruly I find myself scolding him then I laugh because he can't hear me. Then I tell him 'lucky for you that you can't hear me mister' and I laugh.

    Whatever she is, she's a little doll. It's nice to know that the displaced pups are finding such good homes.

    Hi Vicki - I love your name. ;) Welcome and I hope to see more of your postings. This is the best site for help, advice, and friendship. I, too, use the squirt bottle and always keep a cup of water on the counter for more drastic intervention. My two will go at it, then clean each other up once they are wet. It is funny.

    Thanks to all for your hartwarming welcome…. Barklessdog, I get you on the corny feet hahahah I smelled it...hihii still it's hardly an odor... Yes we are happy to bring our dog with us. We are not heading for the south but rather to the northeast to a place called Bibione... We might consider going more south another year...and meet up with Edward.... We do have a yearly beachwalk with only basenji's this year we cannot do it because walking on the sand would yet not be wise due to his bonegrowth... Kind regards to all of you!
