    Hi Pat! Thanks for the warm welcome! We went to see Mattie yesterday! She is a real sweetie. Pat is trying to find Billie (the R&W girl in the photo above) a forever home and we might take her for a trial period next week to see how it goes. She's sooooo affectionate and baroos so much! We are a little unsure of how it will work out as I think Pat said she wanted to try breeding her next year or showing her and we are so new to the idea of "co-owning" a dog. We are not interested in becoming breeders but I'm not opposed to her being shown, bred, etc. I just don't know how that will work out if she is gone when in heat, at competitions, etc. Zorro is neutered so that's not a prob but we go to dog parks everyday and he is off leash most of the time. I guess these are all questions I should ask Pat but we fell in love with Billie yesterday and sooo want her to be a part of our family.

    I am pretty sure that I have met Billie, what is her registered name? I think that Pat had her at our BCONC puppy match and I was the judge. She was a cute little puppy. You should try coursing. Most all of Pat's Basenjis are good coursing dogs.

    The only think that is a bit hard with co-owning and then them being gone for shows, breeding or whelping, is when they are gone, your Zorro would be the "home alone" dog. So sometimes they miss their house mates. But of course always best to talk that over with Pat. When you talk to her, tell her I said HI!

    I co-own both of my B's with my breeder. I have only ever had to leave her at the breeders once, when she was bred and had puppies, then I picked her and other puppy up after that. It was hard to get used to at first but I knew it was coming and was prepared. I showed both of my B's to their championships though, so it would be a little different if she or someone else would be showing your dog. Dog showing can be very fun! Would you be interested in getting into it? I am sure the breeder would show you what to do and then you could show Billie and not be away from her so much?

    I am not sure I'm prepared to show dogs :) I am a nurse and will work every other weekend. It might be too much for me but I am always willing to try something once! I am talking over our options with her breeder, and yes, I'm sure she would love to show me the ropes. We will wait a couple of weeks to take her home as she just came into "season" last night! I was perplexed that Zorro was humping her on Sunday because he is usually the one being dominated ;) I guess we now know why. Thanks for the warm welcome and advice!

    Coursing looks like so much fun! I know nothing about it but I'm sure Z would be excellent at it. He's fast and has a pretty high prey drive.
    I'm emailing with Pat, trying to figure out what will happen when we take her home and she wants to show her, etc. Maybe if she just finishes her championships then we will have for her spayed? Not really sure. How long does it take to finish a championship? I am so green behind the ears in coursing, showing, breeding, etc. so I hope it doesn't come off as being anything but curious!

    That's funny, I had 2 Basenjis previous to Buddy and 1 was named Ringo. I took them both 2 the fort for many years.

    I think that Black and White boy was co-bred by me and Pat F. I have a black boy named Ringo that lives in the city and I think he may yodel on command, I know he is talkative as is his sister who lives with me. He is half Avongara and out of my girl Rally. His niece Mila, a tri, also lives in the city. She was bred by Arlene.

    Yes! Now I remember his owner, Michael, mentioning your name Lisa. Ringo is super sweet and loves to show off his vocal skills. He is truly an exemplary basenji. We see him a couple times a week with his dog walker at Ft. Funston or with his owner in our neighborhood parks.
    We also know Mila very well. We met her and Martin a couple months ago. Mila is a lucky girl because he dotes over her and spoilers her too! She is skilled at teasing Zorro enough until he finally chases her, much to her delight.

    Yes, that is her registered name Arubmec's Billie Jean

    How long to finish depends on a few things, how good the dog is, how the entries are for points, etc. Some dogs finish quickly, some not so. My C-Me finished October 30th, 2 months shy of her 2nd birthday and I had to travel to So. California. She (as all show dogs do) started showing after she was 6 months old. Franie, is pointed towards her championship, but slow to mature so she only has a few points.

    They need 15 points, with at least 2 majors which is winning 3pts or more at a show. One problem we have right now around No. Cal is we do not have the entires to make majors (Reason that I traveled to the PNW and So. Cal). So it could take just a few shows, it could take quite a long time.

    You really should try coursing. In fact there will be coursing this Friday and Saturday in Hollister. The Basenji Club of No. California is having a Basenji Only Lure trial on March 10, 2012 in Gilroy and then the club will be hosting all breed trials end of March. There are other clubs also that will be having trials in Feb/March/April. Many of our trials are held in Hollister.     Well, we have had Billie here for a week and have fallen in L.O.V.E. She is a doll. Uber sweet and affectionate and Zorro adores her. They snuggle like they were meant for each other! It's funny, a few months ago she was taken home by Zorro's brother's parents and they gave her back to Pat as they described her as "wild, hard to manage and…WILD!" She has not shown any of these signs and I take it that she knows she's found her forever home and her new best friend, Zorro. Just happy to have her!!!
    We also decided not to co-own and will not show her. One day we'd like to try lure coursing! Too bad we will be in Tahoe during the trial in March.
    Thanks again to everyone for their input and advise! I've put up some new photos on my profile of the two lovers.

    Hehe, I actually ran into Hobbes' mom about a week before they got Billie, then his dad about a week after they they returned her. He did mention that it was a little too crazy having two young Basenjis in the house.

    I feel very lucky to have such a mellow, "mature" Basenji. laugh But part of me definitely envies those of you who get to live with multiple B's! Someday, perhaps…

    LOL about "wild"… now keep in mind if she was just in season that will sometimes cause what we call "blue funk" and the bitches are a bit Post PMS... and quieter...

    My two girls are way different for 8 wks during and after being in season. They then go back to normal racing, chasing, wreslting, with each other just about 24/7

    @abonnard Pee pads got me through in the end, she would pee every 20 mins for the first months, then 40 mins, then she suddenly went to being able to hold it for many hours. One of the best purchases I got before she arrived was a small carpet washer, saved my sanity. The cleanup is so key otherwise they go back to the same spot.

    @julia87 How much do you know about Basenjis? Have you met any? It's highly recommended to learn as much as possible about them before making a decision to acquire one. This would be a good place to start.

    @basenjilovers - She is very cute, please make sure that DNA testing was done for Fanconi and PRA. And if not or you are not sure, you can get the test kits at www.ofa.org. You do the test as it is a cheek swab.

    Your boys are part of the reason I have basenjis! When I was researching the breed, I attended the Basenji Club of Northern California's Specialty Show and one of your boys spent nearly the entire show in my lap. After that day, I knew I would at some point bring home a basenji and the following spring, I did just that. Nicky, turned 14 years old this past December.

    I am new to Virginia, but not B's. My 11 yr old girl is the love of my life. In training I used lots of tools trying to out smart her. The funniest one was the singing bass. She would go potty in my all white dining room. No matter how I tried I couldn't stop her. I was a stay at home Mom too. I finally set up a singing bass on the floor. I set it on motion detection. When she would go there it would start singing a startle her….She could not figure it out. She quit doing it immediatly and also alerted me...I still laugh to this good day! I also put her leash on my belt for at least 30 minutes a day. She would go where I went. So now no matter where I go in the house, there she is. Each month I was fortunate to go to new Basenji puppy parties. There she could run with about 20+ B puppy's. Even a small dog park would have worked. I took her everywhere with me. I took food from her. So she would know I was the pack leader. I ate first. I would move her when sleeping and gently put her back. I just can't say enough about pack rules. I know other dog owners thought I was nuts. 11 years later I still am having to remind her daily who the real boss is. She is very well behaved and NEVER off her leash. I learned early on, no matter what. She will take off like a rocket if something gets her attention. One time it was a blowing leaf. That inclination will always be a part of the breed. I recommend crate training. I didn't let her sleep with me for quite some time. I learned that short consistant commands are clearer. A shaker can made of aluminum with pennies in it was better than my voice. They will use a short sided box with cedar shavings in it instead of the inside floor. when little. Mine loves raw veggies in the afternoon, Once older. I have used dry food for a long time. She rolls over, shakes, down stay, stand, off, in your chair (for car rides). All for the love of a treat. She enjoyed lure coursing. She enjoyed being shown. She loves my best friends yorkies but no other small dogs. You'll have so much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What great companions they make......Yea! and Good Luck from one who is still trying to outsmart her!
